Assessment and Development Anne Keyes, PhD. And Pat Barbier, Librarian 4/25/ Anne Keyes, Ph.D. Pat Barbier, Librarian

 To develop a Library research module within SLS 1101 The College Experience for possible incorporation into other SLS classes or discipline specific courses  To develop a rubric for assessment of the library research module that can be effectively incorporated into/implemented in (lecture) courses across the curriculum. 4/25/2011 2

 To prepare a proposal to study the impact of the library research module on the students who participate in the module on their performance in Composition classes and graduation success. 4/25/2011 3

 4-5 classes where students are taught how to use ◦ A quality website for information about a choice of “My Ideal Job” ◦ Students are shown how to find library mediated resources on their possible careers  These include scholarly journal articles  Newspaper and magazine articles ◦ Students learn to use citation generators  After showing the students the steps, help is given in the classroom in finding the resources. 4/25/2011 4

 What is the level of entering Anne’s SLS1101 Students’ library research skills in the course?  What change occurs as a result of the students' participation in the SLS1101 library research model we implement?  (The library research module would be used for two semesters of Anne’s classes ) 4/25/2011 5

 Can a correlation be established between Library Module survey results and the student’s grade on the Ideal Job project and overall grade in SLS class and Comp classes?  Can a correlation be established between a student's participation in the library research module of SLS 1101 and completion of SPC Associate's degree? (is this possible to track?) 4/25/2011 6

 Documentation of effectiveness (Post-test results) of library research module and indication of ways to further develop the module.  Correlation of successful grades on library module and post-test results to Comp classes  In conjunction with SPC research in progress, to determine the specific correlation/tracking of SLS 1101 research learning with completion of Associate's degree. 4/25/2011 7

 SLS 1101 is designed to help students become more successful in college.  Learning the basic process of doing research and writing a small research paper on topic of personal interest “My Ideal Job” will give students a head start on learning an important skill for many academic classes that require a research paper.  On the college level, the project introduces the student to the academic culture. 4/25/2011 8

 Budget need: ◦ Printer cartridges and paper for a print portfolio ◦ Software that would allow the students to upload their portfolios ◦ WITS survey maker for the pre and post tests  Research Review Committee Approval ◦ To collect data on individual student's pre and post test results ◦ To track students' grades in Comp classes ◦ To track students’ AA completion rate 4/25/2011 9

 Test Design ◦ Pre-test to measure the students' baseline research skills ◦ Post-test to measure students’ acquisition of research skills  These tests will be created by the librarian (Pat Barbier). 4/25/

 Student portfolio for “My Ideal Job” ◦ Summaries of articles found through research ◦ Citations of sources located. ◦ Reflective essay tying the student's learning skills to the career research. ◦ Oral presentation relating conclusions and personal learning strengths 4/25/

 Ongoing understanding of students' ways of mastering research skills.  Possible contribution of a modular assignment that can be used in SLS courses initially, and in other courses within the curriculum.  Effective research learning will equip SPC students with enhanced means of achieving success within college and later within the workplace. 4/25/

 Library research module can be adapted to particular disciplines  Effective research learning in the developing electronic context will enhance SPC students' academic and professional success 4/25/
