DAQ System at the 2002 ATLAS Muon Test Beam G. Avolio – Univ. della Calabria E. Pasqualucci - INFN Roma

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week2 Hardware and Software Configuration (1) Hardware: Three VME crates: BEAM CRATE Read-out via S-Link 1 RIO-II (CC and ROD emulator) 1 I/O Register (Trigger purpose) 3 KLOE TDCs for tracker readout 1 CAMAC/VME interface for hodoscope readout 2 MDT CRATES 1 Read-out via S-Link, 1 read-out via Ethernet 1 RIO-II (CC and ROD emulator) 3 CSMs for chambers readout each 1 VME Corbo

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week3 Hardware and Software Configuration (2) Hardware: 3 RIOs Six PCs: One running the online software (RunControl, etc…) 2 ROS One receives data via S-Link One receives data via Eth Both have a CORBO PCI 1 for monitoring tasks and DFM 1 for EB, SFI/O and data collection 1 used as GW + DNS of the private network DAQ farm for Event Filter Fast ethernet network for control messages and ROD data Gigabit ethernet for data and connection to the EF farm

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week4 Hardware and Software Configuration (3) Software: DAQ –1 environment Online software release patches ROS software release 2_22 with Linux kernel update OBK upgraded to MySQL database version KLOE software kIPC, VME libraries, TDC libraries Specific modules libraries Rod emulator and crate controller (running on RIO-II) Online monitoring and EF

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week5 The DAQ Schema ADCs, TDCs C. RODROD TDCs RegReg Beam Crate C. RODROD CorboCorbo CSMCSM MDT_1 Crate C. RODROD CorboCorbo CSMCSM MDT_2 Crate Online PC Monitoring Calibration PC PVSS / DCS GEthFEth PC ROS 1 GEthFEth PC ROS 2 GW GEth FEth GEth SFISFO PC Switch GEth Data Flow Barrel Endcap CDR Event Filter Control Switch FEth Ethernet

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week6 New Features: Programmable Trigger Trigger selection through RunControl IGUI Information stored in the IS Trigger controller Reads trigger type from the IS C. RODROD TDCs RegReg Programs the I/O Register Signals sent to the trigger logic

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week7 Pctbmu04 Event Fragments From ROSs Quad PC Farm Calib Online New Features: Event Filter (1) SFOSFI Event Filter Task CDR SFI: SubFarmInput – It receives and buffers the events fragments from ROSs, builds a full event and sends it to the EF SFO: SubFarmOutput – It receives complete events accepted by the EF and writes all data to disk

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week8 New Features: Event Filter (2) TDCs Spectra Channel Map Nowadays the EF produces online histos such as TDCs spectra, channel maps, residuals (this means on-line tracking!)

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week9 New Features: DataFlow Manager (DFM) The DFM informs ROSs where they have to send their data fragment It also receives messages if SFI is not ready to accept a new event Why DFM at H8 test beam? It’s a very useful test It avoids fragment misalignment because of the difference in speed between the two ROSs (one receiving data via S-Link and the other one via Fast Ethernet)

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week10 New Features: Monitoring Tasks They are the same program They run in the on-line environment and are automatically controlled by a controller It’s possible to control them “by hand” and then give the control back to the controller Temporary histos files are created Histos are automatically saved at the end of run C. RODROD CorboCorbo CSMCSM MDT_1 Crate Sampler at crate level (Barrel Event) Monitoring Task 1 Monitoring factory Pctbmu04 SFISFO Monitoring Task 2 Sampler at SFI level (Complete Event) Monitoring factory

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week11 New Features: Online Event Display (1) GEthFEth PC ROS 1 GEthFEth PC ROS 2 GEth FEth GEth SFISFO PC Swi tch Persint reads the event at the SFI level… …and displays it

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week12 New Features: Online Event Display (2)

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week13 This Java panel is executed at the end of each run New Features: OBK Interface Shifter comment to the run From the IS From the configuration DB Informations sent to the OBK to be displayed as comments

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week14 DAQ – DCS (1) DCS achievements: End Cap Alignment Bar and MDTs (EOL-EOS) Temperature Monitoring Barrel MDTs Temperature Monitoring Chamber Gas System Monitoring Acquiring SPS-H8 Accelerator Data using PVSSII Integrate new CAEN SY2527 HV system in PVSSII New DAQ-DCS Communication to Exchange Data Information Service used to publish informations as gas parameters and magnet current

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week15 DAQ – DCS (2) Daq – DCS communication: Alignment EndCap DCS implemented with a PVSS application DDC (DAQ to DCS Communication) package used to implement a communication system from and to DAQ (Start/End of Run, Run Number) Barrel DCS uses ICARAS software No DAQ communication Temperature Temperature data sent to the DAQ and recorded in an ascii file along with the DAQ main stream of data

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week16 Achievements Full system working with good stability The system has been able to handle a rate of ~ 5 KHz System limit has not been reached Sometimes low rate because of electronics problems Very complete configuration: 3 crates (2 read-out via S-Link and 1 via Ethernet) 2 ROSs EB, SFI/O, DFM, EF Online monitoring Online event display DAQ to DCS communication

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week17 Problems Main Problems Missing fragment Not frequent Possible random fragment size bigger than the page size due to chamber noise Recovery time about 3 minutes RIO CPUs OS not handling well system resources PC ROS 1 ADCs, TDCs C. RODROD TDCs RegReg Beam Crate C. RODROD CorboCorbo CSMCSM MDT_1 Crate Other Problems DCS communication Application not killed at the DAQ shutdown Just kill the application “by hand” and restart OBK browser not showing comments

2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week18 Many feedbacks to DAQ Database Interface Schema DFM Protocol ? Buffer levels Architecture Trigger distribution ? RIO ROS Compiler Logical ID
