Long conversation W: I know that you have been studying lions and living in Africa for at least 10 years and have a good documentary of lions ’ behavior and their habits. Could you start with a brief explanation of lion ’ s behavior? M: Certainly. Lions are very social animals. They live in groups, each of which normally includes about three to twelve females and two to four males. There is one dominant male. They depend on each other for hunting, cleaning their fur, raising young, etc. W: You mentioned about fur cleaning and I find it very interesting. The documentary show always has lions clean their fur and they seem to be occupied with cleanliness and tidiness. M: That ’ s true. However, male lions normally spend a lot more time cleaning themselves. But when they ’ re under a lot of stress, which happens when they don ’ t feel comfortable with other lions or with their surroundings, they do it more frequently. M: My understanding of lions seems that they yawn quite a bit more than any other animal does, for example, monkey. Could you explain if there is any particular reason for this or it is just because of boredom? W: Boredom? You might think so. But actually a lion ’ s yawn is a familiar sight at zoos. Even wild lions are habitual yawners. You ’ ll see lions yawn after waking from rest or just before feeding, a sign that are gathering strength to do something. And yes, yawning is just as infectious among lions as it is among people.

A Tragedy or a Blessing? Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States. The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about their new life. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clark ’ s front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being separated from others for fourteen days. The family ’ s dreams were destroyed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father watched the ship leave without the Clark family, filled with disappointment and anger. Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland, the mighty Titanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he had felt was a tragedy into a blessing. Passage One

Passage Two Chewing Gum We all know about chewing gum. History tells us that the man most responsible for chewing gum was a Mexican called Santa Ana 150 years ago. Santa Ana went New York City with a large amount of strange material called chicle. It was the dried juice of a tree found in the jungles of Mexico. He believed that chicle could replace rubber. And he looked for an American inventor to help him. He met a man named Thomas Adams. Mr.Adams agreed to help him, but without success. He looked for Santa Ana tell him the sad news, but found Santa Ana had gone back home to Mexico. Huge amounts of chicle remained. And Adams wondered what to do with it. One day Adams was in a store when he saw a little girl buy a piece of wax to chew. Adams had seen Santa Ana break off small pieces of chicle from time to time and chew it. He told the store owner that he had something better than wax and he made several hundred little balls of chicle. The store owner sold them all and asked for more. Adams went to Mexico for more chicle. And the chewing gum industry was born. Many stories were spread about chewing gum in the early days. Some Americans use “ chewing gum ” in a funny expression to joke about someone ’ s lack of intelligence. They say the person does not have the mental ability to walk and chew gum at the same time.
