Co-ordination & Harmonisation of Advanced e-Infrastructures Research Infrastructures – Grant Agreement n Regional progress report: Mediterranean Salem Al-Agtash, ASREN 1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb. 2012

2 Status before CHAIN  EUMEDCONNECT2 network which connects some Arab Mediterranean countries to Europe

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb WP2 Progress  Coordinating with its ARAB NREN partners for verifying and collecting some technical data on the existing e-Infastructures  Dissemination of CHAIN efforts in the context of the underlying frameworks and software architectures towards interoperability and integration of regional e-Infrastructures Working paper: “High level interfaces towards ubiquitous harmonization of e-infrastructure services”  (During e-AGE 2011, Arab, Turkish, and EU NRENs signed Amman declaration to continue support e-Infrastructure and build on the success of the EUMEDGrid support project)

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Questionnaire/ Analysis (WP2)  On-line questionnaire targeted to national and regional Grid infrastructures  Follow up for verification and validation with all Arab NRENs

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Most of NGIs established in 2006 Majority of the NGIs are in a nascent state Range of Academic Researches is a few 10s. This is much less than the range of the other regions in the world which is ! 1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb NGI sites (WP2) Regional cooperation has to be fostered EUMEDGRID-Support improved it in Med region More for access to the other counties – CHAIN is an opportunity

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Long-term sustainability: ASREN (WP2)  Builds on EUMEDCONNECT2 to connect all Arab countries

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Africa & Arabia ROC (WP4)  Hosting the Africa & Arabia Regional Operation Centre, taking over the activities performed in the context of the EUMEDGRID- Support project (User support, Technical support, Information sharing, etc.

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Africa & Arabia ROC (WP4)  Developing a roadmap to further extend the e-Infrastructures deployed by EUMEDCONNECT and EUMEDGRID to all Arab countries  Africa & Arabia ROC will be the coordination and support point for all sites in the Arab region  Africa & Arabia ROC Website has been installed

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Outreach (WP5)  Supporting ASREN establishment – till June 2011  October 2011/ Workshop Developing Lebanese National Research and Education Network Beirut, Lebanon  November 2011/ Joint CHAIN/EPIKH School for ROC management in Amman, Jordan

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Next – e-Infrastructure level  UAE installed a new highly sophisticated grid system that will join Africa & Arabia ROC  Consolidation of cooperation between grids in the ASREN region and beyond through CHAIN, embedded within ASREN  Plans for a consortium as a result of e-AGE to establish connectivity between neighboring countries in the Arab region

1 st CHAIN Review – Athens, 03 Feb Next – Community level  More contacts to existing VRCs, examples:  Genomics applications  Mathematical modeling, with intensive numerical analysis  Emerging applications in software applications to environmental resources  Consolidating communities from EPIKH schools in Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan, and the Modeling grid applications in Lebanon  Activities for federated identity and science gateway and building capacity through joint research projects – initial interest at UAE  School planned for GATE users in Algeria in April using EUMEDGRID Science Gateway based on the CHAIN model  Upcoming e-AGE towards better integration of efforts at the regional level
