NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center HU Develop and Implement Education Materials and Activities for NOAA’s Science On a Sphere Plan and coordinate (with the STARBASE Atlantis Hampton Roads group) field trip experiences for ~1200 Portsmouth city 6’th grade students to interact with the SOS at TNMC. –Portsmouth Public school system has a large concentration of under- served students. –This activity is led by HU graduate student docents who serve as excellent role models. Leveraging existing NASA and NOAA Education and Outreach Programs managed by HU to include SOS Education Materials Development of an online Problem-Based Learning Module that incorporates SOS data visualizations Examples include:

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Meet the HU Graduate Student Docents Jasper Lewis Chris Spells Melissa Yesalusky Sydney Paul

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Calipso Cloudsat And Globe Educators Workshop In July, 2006, Middle school teachers from around the country, France, Canada, and Puerto Rico were treated to an SOS field trip. They were CCAG participants.

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Our First 6’th Grade Field Trip!

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Our First Group Picture!

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center HU and Bob Myers of the Institute for Global and Environmental Strategies lead the development of an online PBL The PBL will support exploration of the environmental scenarios displayed via the SOS and focus on Atlantic basin hurricanes The PBL will be similar to the ones developed by HU for the CALIPSO satellite mission’s education and outreach program (EPO) Each PBL will include a teachers guide. Examples of HU’s PBL’s are displayed online: Online Problem-Based Learning Module (PBL)

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Dr. Ruby Beale and Ms. Diana Cooper (HU Business School) Develop and execute an educational marketing needs assessment Develop an Educational Marketing Program with Community Partners Increase the exposure and interest in the SOS program to diverse audiences Increase the diversity of participants who attend the SOS exhibit Increase the awareness of NOAA’s contribution to the quality of life and learning Business Marketing Component

NOAA SOS Workshop – January 22, 2007, Maryland Science Center Mentor a graduate student of business interested in pursuing “the use of SOS for marketing government and commercial weather services”, as a thesis topic Use SOS related graphics in HU atmospheric science courses to promote science topics germane to NOAA Provided HU graduate student docent support for TNMC SOS exhibit –Teachers attending the National CALIPSO 2006 Educator Workshop, at HU, visited the SOS at TNMC as part of their field experience. –Will support field-trips consisting of ~1200 6’th graders from the Portsmouth city school system –HU graduate students also present SOS materials in business courses as part of the marketing needs assessment –HU graduate students serve as SOS docents on Saturdays Excellent Role-Models for diverse audiences Summary
