PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT Presented by ROBERT FOX Technology Education Narragansett Pier School

WHERE TO BEGIN Why will students need a portfolio? –Visual resume of student work – Prep school admissions –College admissions –Financial aid requests –Job interviews

COVER PAGE Just as the cover of a book draws you to pick it up,so should your portfolio cover. It should be interesting, colorful and a reflection of you.

CONTENTS The portfolio is not a scrapbook Bigger and thicker is not better The reader has has limited time Organize by employability skills –Academic –Teamwork –Personal management

ACADEMIC SKILLS Employers need workers with –good communication skills –Perform basic math calculations –Know how to solve problems –Use science and technologies

ACADEMIC SKILLS Transcripts of grades State tests Honor Roll list National Honor Society Test papers Letters of Recommendation A list of computer programs with examples Book reports Business letter Awards Science fair project Art projects

TEAMWORK SKILLS Employers want workers who are able to: –Effectively communicate with others –Be responsive –Contribute to the group –Be both leaders and followers

TEAMWORK SKILLS Newspaper articles A sporting event program Certificates Team photographs Ribbons, medals,or pictures of your team uniform School play program Chorus certificate Band certificate Clubs Chess team Yearbook staff

PERSONAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS They need people: –Who show up for work everyday and be on time –Who are responsible –Demonstrate flexibility –Show initiative –Have career plans

PERSONAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS Transcript with attendance and tardiness records Chart of chores you perform at home Ledger showing payments you make Timeline used to complete a project Page from your personal planner Exercise schedule Team practice schedule Class schedule

OUT-of-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES College and employers want to know how you spend your free time. Include items from church, community service, family events, travel, summer fun and your hobbies. These outside activities reveal a great deal about you as a person.

SUMMARIES As you are choosing your entries, there is one other important thing you need to include. Just because you know what your page represents, there’s no guarantee the reader has any clue as to what it means. You need to include a summary message. Make the summary very evident to the reader by boxing it in, adding color and changing the font style.

CONGRATULATIONS There is good news and bad news. The good news is you have a portfolio to use. The bad news is. It’s never really finished. As you gain experiences, achievements, and accomplishments, you will want to add them to your portfolio.
