Oley Valley Middle School Science Project Requirement

Format for the science project requirement Mandatory for all students in grades 6 through 8 Students work on the project independently at home. Students have the school year to work on the project. Projects are to be completed by May 2 nd. Set up on May 8 th. Expo on the 9 th. There are some choices as to how to fulfill the requirement. (examples to follow) The science project grade will be 10% of the 4 th quarter science grade. There are 3 components to the project.

Science Expo ALL students in grades 6, 7, & 8 will have their science projects at the May 9 th Expo either in the judging and award section or the area for display. Students in grades 4 & 5, plus the high school are invited and encouraged to participate also.

Examples of Opportunities to fulfill Science Project Requirement * Traditional Science Experiment Projects Will be judged Awards given * Participation in the Reading-Berks Science and Engineering Fair Will also participate for judging at Expo or opt for display group * Participation in an extra-curricular activity such as Envirothon or Science Olympiad, * A scouting or other community project that is science based

Three (3) Components to Project ALL projects must have the minimum 3 components. 1. A visual presentation Traditional project – science board For display only – science board, video, or powerpoint 2. A log book 3. A report that incorporates research A booklet with guidelines, suggestions, and rubrics will be distributed to the students during class meetings.

Reading-Berks Science & Engineering Fair All the students in the high school and middle school are encouraged to submit a science project to the RBSEF. There are a variety of awards presented and the OVSD has always been well represented with award recipients. The RBSEF is being held the week of 3/11/13. Registration is by 2/12/13. Students who register need to print copies of their registration forms and send them to Ms. Short at the middle school by 2/13/13. Forms are located on the website – Please submit all required forms. There will also be an OVMS Field Trip Permission form to participate in the interviews on March 12 th. Ms. Short takes the students to Albright College from 12:00 – 3:00 The school district will pay the $10 entry fee.
