Periodic Table 2

DO NOW Name two elements that would have similar properties to Nitrogen. Why is this? TODAY I WILL LEARN HOW TO Identify properties of metals, nonmetal and metalloids. Describe how the properties of elements change across a period. Explain how the properties of the first 20 elements of the Periodic Table are related to their atomic structure.

UNIT 4 INCENTIVES The class who has the highest percentage of homework handed in COMPLETED AND ON TIME (three homeworks this unit) will win a PIZZA PARTY for lunch with my mom and sister.

Quick Review for Ticket$ What are the rows called on the periodic table? What are the columns called on the periodic table? Do periods or groups have similar properties? Does Calcium have more in common with Potassium or Beryllium? What are valance electrons? What’s a physical property?

Properties of: KEYCLOTH

Categorizing…? If we had to put the key and the cloth into two distinct categories, what would they be? What are examples of metals and nonmetals? Use the periodic table to help you.

What do you think metalloids are?

Properties of Metals Luster: shiny Good conductors of heat and electricity High density High melting point Ductile: can be drawn out into thin wires Malleable: can be hammered into thin sheets

Properties of Non-metals No luster (dull appearance) Poor conductor of heat and electricity Brittle: breaks easily Not ductile Not malleable Low density Low melting point

Properties of Metalloids Solids Can be shiny or dull Ductile Malleable Conduct heat and electricity better than nonmetals but not as well as metals

Examples of… Metals- Non-metals- Metalloids-

Valance Electrons Valance electrons: electrons in the outermost shell that determines properties and ways it interacts

Valance electrons in the first column Elements in the same column have the same number of valance electrons Same valance electrons = same properties FAMILIES ARE SIMILAR!

Let’s Practice… Oxygen Metal, nonmetal, metalloid? Properties? Valance electrons? What elements is it similar to?

Let’s Practice… Boron Metal, nonmetal, metalloid? Properties? Valance electrons? What elements is it similar to?

Let’s Practice… Barium Metal, nonmetal, metalloid? Properties? Valance electrons? What elements is it similar to?

CLASSWORK QUESTIONS 1. Give an example of a: a. Metal b. Non-metal c. Metalloid 2. An element does not conduct heat and has 7 valance electrons. What element could it be? 3. An element is very shiny and ductile. It has 1 valance electrons. What element could it be? 4. What makes families similar? 5. How does properties of elements shift from right to left?
