R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Photonic Components: Strategic Objective Ronan Burgess European Commission Directorate General Information Society and Media - Nanoelectronics and Photonics - Information Society Technologies - IST

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting R.Burgess Definition Photonics is the science of generating and harnessing light. It encompasses light sources, light detectors, and light manipulation (through guidance and, amplification, …) and its use for a wide range of applications.

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Photonics: Application Areas Long-HaulMetropolitanHome access Board -> Inter-Chip -> Intra-Chip Photonics in communications: expanding and scaling Health (“bio-photonics”) Environment sensing Security imaging Photonics: diffusing into other application sectors

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Objectives To develop advanced materials, solid-state sources and micro- and nano-scale photonic devices, and to integrate photonic functions in micro/nanoelectronics components ('Photonic system on a chip'). Projects are expected to address research challenges for mid- term to long-term industrial exploitation in one or more of the following application contexts: –"Information technologies for health care and life science": bio- photonic functional components and sub-assemblies; –"Communications and Infotainment": components and subsystems for low-cost or high-performance; –" Environment and Security ": photonic sensors, fiber sensors, imaging components.

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting The Research Bricks: BioPhotonic functional components and sub- assemblies Components for low cost / High performance Imaging and sensors BioPhotonic functional components and sub- assemblies Components for low cost / High performance Imaging and sensors The Cements: Integration Technologies Manufacturing Scalability Education and Training The Cements: Integration Technologies Manufacturing Scalability Education and Training Environment / Security Application contexts Health care / Life Science Communication / Infotainment Call 5 - Topical coverage

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Call 5 – Photonics - Focus 1. Manufacturing technologies and device concepts 3. Photonic systems on chip - communications (signal processing, wavelength manipulation) - Healthcare (bio-photonic sensors 2. Hybrid and monolithic integration for: - greater device functionality - Reduced cost and size - Reduced power consumption

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Call 5 – Photonics - Focus 4. Advanced components for optical networks and low-cost components for broadband access 5. Advance sources (Semiconductor, organic, fiber sources): - Compactness, tunability and spectral purity - Solid-state lighting for ICT aplications

R.Burgess 2 June National Contact Point Meeting Call 5 - Photonics - Instruments Integrated Projects (65 % of budget): - Biophotonics functional components and subassemblies - Low cost communication components - Advance source technologies for multiple applications  Application-driven and medium-term exploitation STREPS (35 % of budget):  Medium- to long-term exploitation CAs/SSAs - Roadmaps, coordination - Access to components for education, validation, standardization and dissemination activities And … we encourage new member/candidate states and SMEs
