CSCI 101 R 3:30 Dr. Garrison

 What is software? ◦ Set of computer programs that tells the computer what to do and enables it to perform different tasks

 An agreement between the user and the software developer that must be accepted prior to installing the software on a computer  Includes: ◦ Outlines the acceptable use of the program and any action that violates the agreement ◦ Any warranty that may come with the software ◦ Under what circumstances copies of the software can be made

 An arrangement that allows a site to copy and use software on multiple computers  Benefits:

 A computer user who copies an application onto more than one computer when the licensing agreement does not permit ◦ Negatively affects businesses financially: the reduced cost lessens the amount of money available for further software research  As a result software manufacturers are using more programming mechanisms to prevent repeating installation

 Copyright is the legal protection given to published works, forbidding anyone but the author from publishing or selling them

 A trade group that represents a number of the world's largest software makers. Its main purpose is trying to stop copyright infringement of software produced by its members
