Presentation Overview What is this social policy framework all about and why does it matter? What do you think about all this? Take what we have learned today and provide our input. Ways to participate!

Why are we here today? This affects us. The social policy framework will inform decisions about the how we meet human needs.

Who does this work affect? The Short Answer: Everyone. The Long Answer: Everyone. The social policy framework is for all Albertans.

What is a policy framework? A policy framework is… –a set of principles and goals that helps us make decisions –usually communicates to a broad audience

What is a framework’s purpose? Its purpose is to… –give overall direction to planning and decision-making within an organization –develop and communicate a common understanding –ensure consistency and alignment (that everyone is on the same page, working towards the same things)

What is social policy? The actions, guidelines, principles, laws, and regulations that influence our development as human beings, our living conditions, and how we respond to human needs.

Question: What do you think are some things that could be considered “social”? Employment, housing, homelessness, childcare, poverty, inequality, gender…these are only some examples of policy areas that could be considered “social”.

What is a social policy framework? A social policy framework is… –a statement that describes the overall future direction of social policy in Alberta

What is a social policy framework? The strategic policy direction for social policy in Alberta that describes: Where are we going? Vision and Outcomes How will we get there? Enabling strategies (including poverty reduction) How will we make decisions together? Principles Indicators of Success Who is responsible? Roles and Responsibilities

Why do we need a social policy framework? –Social policy is important to how we describe and achieve the quality of life we want for ourselves, our families, and communities –We need to address the challenges to achieving that quality of life –We need to build on our successes by focusing on persistent social challenges –We need a new approach to social policy – one that better co-ordinates the resources, investments, and actions of governments, communities, individuals, and families

Call to Action How we meet our needs and aspirations in areas like childcare, housing, and employment affects everyone – including you. Speak about what it means to live a quality life in Alberta, and share your ideas about how we can ensure all Albertans have the opportunity to succeed. Join the discussion and help our province thrive.

Discussion Questions

Discussion Question: Vision What words would you include in your vision for social policy? What do you think about this vision: Alberta is one of the finest places in the world to live, work and raise a family because all Albertans have the opportunity to engage in our economic, social and cultural life.

Discussion Question: Outcomes What results are needed in order to achieve your vision for Alberta’s social policy?

Discussion Question: Principles What principles should guide social policy in Alberta? A principle is a standard of behaviour – how we want to act, implement a service, or treat people.

Discussion Question: Strategies What actions could help achieve the desired outcomes for Albertans?
