Marshall High School 1 HOUR LUNCH MARSHALL PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD PRESENTATION FEBRUARY 17, 2015

What is the 1 Hour Lunch?  A move away from the 3 – 30 minute lunch periods to a 1 hour block of time in the middle of the day for the entire school.  What occurs during this time?  A time where students all have a common time for lunch, meetings, socialization, time to meet with teachers, and time to work on school work, and for some Academic Intervention Time (AIT)  Meetings that used to happen before or after school now meet during this time.  Ex. Student Council, NHS, FFA, BPA, Yearbook, Cultures United, Art Club  Math help center – staffed by math teachers and NHS students.

Why did we approach the School Board, staff, and students about this idea?  A need for young people to develop their self discipline skills specifically in the area of time management.  A desire to try and help our young people become more independent not more dependent.  A belief that we can accomplish more by slowing down.  By having time to self reflect can we produce a higher quality of work.  With the implementation of Ramp Up we needed a time for our student activities to meet.  Desire to get more students involved in student activities and extra- curricular activities.

Who Gets the Privilege of the 1 Hour Lunch?  Students whose grades are at least a D+ or higher are eligible for the 1 hour lunch.  Students whose grades are at a D or lower are required to meet with their teacher or in the AIT room for 30 minutes of their lunch.  Will vs. Skill belief  Detention for students who are expected to attend but choose not to.  Teachers  Teachers get their 30 minute contractual lunch. The other 30 minutes they are expected to be available to work with students.  Teachers are asked to communicate with students as to when, where, what time they are available to meet with students.

Where Did The Time Come From?  Lengthening of the school day by 7 minutes  Shortened the hall passing time by 2 minutes (gained 6 minutes)  Students and staff already had 30 minutes for lunch  Shortened our 90 minute blocks to 86 minutes  Where do students eat?

How Do We Serve People At One Time?  Students are allowed to eat throughout the building (with a few exceptions) 11:0011:1011:20

When Are Grades Determined  Last summer we made a decision to change the manner and frequency in which grades are determined and posted.  How are grades calculated?  Semester classes  Used to be calculated on 50% of each quarter  Moved to a cumulative based system where points accrue throughout the duration of the course  How often are grades posted?  Years past – Mid-quarter and quarter  Now – grades are posted every 3 weeks – Also changed the dates for PT Conferences  Why?  After each grading period ends, the list of students is sent out to the teachers, parent receives a phone call and an letting them know that their student has been placed on AIT and an explanation of what this is.

How Do We Monitor the Effectiveness?  How is it going?  Data Review of student performance  Teacher’s perspective (quantitative data)  Student Perspective  Taher Perspective (video testimonial from Lori)  Parent’s Perspective
