OCTOBER 14, 2009

IN THE PREVIOUS SESSIONS WE… -Wrote our Outlines for Major Composition #1

FOR TODAY WE WILL -Review Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

Before we review the rules of Pronoun- Antecedent Agreement, let’s watch these short video clips first.

Now let’s begin reviewing the rules of Pronoun- Antecedent Agreement by reading a modified excerpt from the write-up, “Double Incredible,” which was posted on the Ateneo website.

This article is quite well-written save for the errors in pronoun usage. Using incorrect pronouns will cause confusion, and will muddle up the message we want to impart, so we must always be careful when we use pronouns.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement PRONOUN - A pronoun is a substitute for a noun. It refers to a person, place, thing, feeling, or quality but does not refer to it by its name. The pronoun in the following sample sentence is bolded. –“The story of Star Wars was written from a futuristic point of view. It is an in- depth journey into an alternate universe.”

Pronoun-antecedent agreement ANTECEDENT - An antecedent is the word, phrase, or clause to which a pronoun refers to, understood using the context. The antecedent in the following sample sentence is bolded. –“The story of Star Wars was written from a futuristic point of view. It is an in- depth journey into an alternate universe.”

Pronoun-antecedent agreement A personal pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number, person and gender. –Sports writers declared my (their) predictions for the UAAP Finals.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use a singular personal pronoun with two or more singular antecedents joined by or or nor. –Neither Rabeh Al-Hussaini nor Nonoy Baclao wants to lose their (his) chance at a title.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use a plural personal pronoun with two or more singular antecedents joined by and. –Ryan Buenafe, Eric Salamt and Kirk Long combined for 24 points – he (they) really stepped up!

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use a plural personal pronoun if any part of a compound antecedent joined by or or nor is plural. –If Jai Reyes or his teammates arrive, the Ateneo fans will welcome him (them).

Pronoun-antecedent agreement When dealing with pronoun- antecedent agreement, take care not to shift in either person or gender. –Rabeh was sighted at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center, where you (he) had your (his) ankle treated for a sprain.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use singular personal pronoun when the antecedent is a singular indefinite pronoun. –Each of the loyal fans of Ateneo welcomed the Eagles as their (his or her) new UAAP Champion.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use plural personal pronoun when the antecedent is a plural indefinite pronoun. –Many of the UE fans did not know what really happened with his (their) team.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement Use singular personal pronoun when the antecedent is a singular indefinite pronoun. –Only one of the players did not control their (his) emotions during the game.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement A reflexive pronoun must agree with an antecedent that is clearly stated. –The Blue Eagles can now call them (themselves) Back-to- Back Champions. –In Game 1, Rabeh carried the team by him (himself).

!!! REMEMBER !!! -It takes a fair amount of discernment to see which pronoun fits which word. Just the same, it takes a fair amount of discernment to see the sole purpose of our existence.

FROM Carl Jung “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.
