Angela Daly’s Research Paper Let’s discuss your answers to the questions about the research paper.

1. What is Angela Daley’s thesis? The thesis statement is usually at the end of the introduction. Her thesis: Last sentence in the introduction. “Regulation is needed because drivers using phones are seriously impaired and because laws on negligent and reckless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders.”

2. On page one of this paper, we see the name Besthoff in brackets 2. On page one of this paper, we see the name Besthoff in brackets. Why is this? Bestoff is the name of the author of the website that Daly used to report the information about Morgan Pena. (See Works Cited) There is not a page number because the website does not have actual pages.

Stockwell is the author of the article from the Washington Post. 3. On page two, we see (Stockwell B8). Refer to the works cited page and record below what you think this means. Stockwell is the author of the article from the Washington Post. Daly cited/quoted his article (found on page B8) in order to give the information about John and Carole Hall’s death.

4. Why is New England Journal of Medicine underlined? It is underlined because it is the title of a journal. All titles of publications should be underlined.

5. Why is the quote at the bottom of page two set off from the other text? This is a long quotation. Citation rules state that a quotation longer than 40 words or 3 lines needs to be indented and set apart from the text. Also, long quotations, like this one, do not need quotation marks.

6. On page three of the paper, we see only (522-23) and no name 6. On page three of the paper, we see only (522-23) and no name. Why is this? The numbers are the page numbers from where the quotation was taken. There is no name because the author’s name is cited at the beginning of the sentence. Using police records, John M. Violanti of the Rochester Institute of Technology investigated the relation between traffic fatalities…in a vehicle (522-23).

7. In this same paragraph, why is it necessary to reference the author when no quotes have been used? By referencing the author, the reader knows that it is an indirect quote. Meaning, this is a summary of what was taken for the author’s work. Daly is essentially citing the author’s ideas. If it is a direct quote, it would look like the example on the next page…

Quotation using quotations. People must consider that “not all cell phone users can concentrate on the road, their driving and their conversations” (Redelmeier & Tibshirami 457).

8. What is the counter argument brought up by Daley? Find the argument where Daley shows that she understands why cell phone use is not regulated.

This is your opinion – needs to be completed. 9. Why is it important that a counter argument be included in a research paper? This is your opinion – needs to be completed.

10. What analogy does Daley use to justify passing a law about cell phones and driving? What story does Daley use to illustrate her point that passing a law about cell phones and driving is a good idea.

This means that this is a quotation of a quotation. 11. On page five of this paper, we see (qtd. in Haughney A8). What does this mean? This means that this is a quotation of a quotation. Daly is quoting a quotation that Christine Haughney used in her article in the Washington Post (see works cited).

12. Do you think this is a good research essay? Explain. This is your opinion. Should have a well written opinion with explanations and justifications.
