Quotation Marks with Direct Quotations!!!

Direct Quotation Represents a person’s exact speech or thoughts and is enclosed in quotation marks.  EXAMPLES “Doh!” – Homer Simpson “Fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” – Muhammad Ali The students declared, “Man, I wish Ms. Ruiz would stop assigning homework!” (Introductory Expression) “Keep wishing,” replied Ms. Ruiz. (Concluding expression) “Summer reading,” stated Ms. Ruiz, “is important to your overall grade.” (Interrupting expression)

Indirect Quotations Report only the general meaning of what a person said or thought and does not require quotation marks. (In papers, this does not mean you do not cite it!)  EXAMPLES Ms. Ruiz, a 9 th and 10 th grade English teacher at Doral Academy, said that she would give her top students recognition every other week for their hard work.

HOMEWORK Imagine you are a journalist for the Doral Academy Times. Create a piece for your newspaper based on the EXCLUSIVE interview you did with your partner in class. Include at least three direct quotations (introductory, concluding, and interrupting expression) and at least two indirect quotations.
