Grant Writing Basics State Fire and Rescue School – Lexington, KY June 11, 2009 Buffalo Trace Area Development District Kevin Cornette Economic Development Director

Introductions What is Buffalo Trace ADD? What We do? Who Am I? My Experiences in Grant Writing What do we want to gain from today’s class?

Basics of Grant Writing Be Organized Don’t Procrastinate! Check Your work Have someone else check your work Have someone else check both your work! Use Local Data

What would you Ask? Case Study 1 You are the President of a Grant Foundation. Someone comes into your office and asks for 100,000? What will you ask them?

What Most Grant Making Organizations Want to Know Who are You? What do you do? What is your Problem? What is Your Solution? How Much Will it Cost? Why do you need this money? Do the Benefits outweigh the costs? What difference will this make in your community?

FEMA Fire Assistance Grant Detail They have specific Program aspects they want to know  Who are you?  What is your identified risk?  What is your solution/remedy?  How much will it cost?  Why do you need this money?  What are you getting – ( Cost/Benefit?)  What difference will this grant make?

Hands On Activity Choose a Project You have 10 Minutes to write a grant narrative. I will backup to Last Slide so you have the questions. Be Concise – Not wordy Answer the Questions you would ask. Assume the Reviewer knows NOTHING about your project.

From the Reviewers Standpoint Always keep in mind that MOST of the time, people reading and deciding on your grant – May not know you, your organization, or why you need the project. You must paint a picture of your project for the reviewers.

FEMA Fire Assistance Grant Narrative Review of Successful Grant Narrative This Handout is a Successful Grant Narrative. The information is tailored to a specific community. This provides you with a guide to the type of information that catches the attention of FEMA reviewers.
