USM Penang AI3 Update Wan Tat Chee

Current Status w Tender has been approved and sent to the respective vendors to commence work w Cabin housing the computer and networking equipment to be setup first w Site Preparation to commence anytime now w Planned project completion is early November

Planned Site w Area behind School of Building & Planning w Relatively high ground, not obstructed by trees w Need a cabin to house networking equipment w Close to highway, provide outsiders a glimpse of research facilities, green focus w Long term site on top of new School of Computer Science building

View of Planned Site with simulated 4.5 m Satellite Dish (View towards South).

Environmental Considerations w With the threat of La Nina, site location has been moved further away from trees w Impact to lowest achievable angle of elevation (tree line in front of the area) w Since JCSAT-3 uses a high elevation, it is still OK

Proposed Research w Wide Area Internet Multicasting (e.g., MBONE) for Multimedia Conferencing, Simulcast data delivery w Evaluate Satellite based IP Version 6 (IPv6) Wide Area Interconnectivity (6BONE) for future advanced networks w Linking TEMAN (ATM Broadband Testbed in Malaysia) with other high speed networks in the region (APAN, etc.)
