 The constellation Virgo has many identities in ancient cultures.  One identity of Virgo is Astraea.  Astraea is the goddess of innocence purity and was the daughter of Zeus and Themis (the goddess of justices) and the sister of Pudicitia. (Modesty)  During the Golden Age (believed to be Titan rule rather than Olympian) the gods and goddess lived together on Earth with humans.

 When the Olympians took over, (Zeus, Hera, Athena and etc) Zeus was a harsh leader. He believed that humans were lowly creatures and should be treated like animals.  Prometheus, a Titan, sided with humans and became the protector of man. He stole fire from the Olympians. Zeus punished him by chaining him to the Caucasus Mountains.

 Zeus, however, was not finished. He then sent down Pandora. With Pandora, he sent down a box that held all the negative emotions in life, ranging from greed to spite. Pandora opened this box, all the gods and goddesses escaped to Olympus. The last one to leave Earth was Astraea. She escaped to the heavens but still hopes to return to Earth. In the mean time she stays in the sky, watching over Earth.

 Virgo is also linked to many other prominent goddesses.  In India, Virgo is believed to be Kauni. In the Indian belief, Kauni was the mother of the goddess Krishna.  The Babylonians connected her to the goddess Ishtar. Ishtar’s husband Tammuz, the god of harvest, was forced to the underworld, the world went dark and crops died. With the people in trouble, the gods were forced to intervene. Ishtar and Tammuz were both saved and the harvesting started again.  The other identities of Virgo are Isis, Cybele, Mary, Mother of Jesus, and Athena.

 Aquarius is considered the God of the Waters and regarding as a good god by some and a bad god by others, depending on the climate of their region.  To people who lived in a dry climate, Aquarius was looked as a kindly god who brought rain.  To the Babylonians, Aquarius was a bad god and referred to the month when the Sun was in Aquarius as the month of "the curse of rain."  Aquarius is associated with the Odysseus, King of Ithaca, from the Greek myth of the Trojan War, and with the Greco-Roman titans Uranus/Caelus, Cronus/Saturn and Promethius.

 The water carrier represented by the zodiacal constellation Aquarius is Ganymede was the son of Tros, king of Troy. While tending his father's flocks on Mount Ida, he was spotted by Zeus. Zeus became enamored of the boy and flew down to the mountain in the form of a large bird, whisking Ganymede away to the heavens. Ever since, the boy has served as cupbearer to the gods.  Then the story differs. One version states that Zeus sent his pet eagle, to carry Ganymede to Olympus.

 Once Ganymede arrived, he had to deal with the wrath of Hera, wife of Zeus. She was annoyed by Ganymede for two reasons. First, that her husband had strong feelings for a mere boy and second, that Ganymede occupied the position previously held by her own daughter Hebe, goddess of youth.  Zeus was not discouraged by Hera, accompanied the great god on his travels, impressing him with his kindness. Realizing how in need of water the people on earth were, he pleaded with Zeus to be allowed to help them and was given permission to send down rain. Eventually he was glorified as Aquarius, god of rain, and placed amongst the stars.

 There is, yet, another version of the myth. When Ganymede was taken by Zeus, he became his slave. For taking his son, Zeus offered Ganymede's father a herd of the finest horses in the land.  One day Ganymede has was tired of being Zeus’s slave, he decided to pour out all of the wine, ambrosia, and water of the gods, refusing to stay Zeus's cup bearer any longer. The legend goes that the water all fell to Earth, causing overwhelming rains for days, that created a massive flood that flooded the entire world.  Zeus originally wanted to punish Ganymede, but in a rare moment of self-reflection, Zeus realized that he has been a unkind to the boy. Instead, he made him immortal as the constellation of Aquarius.

 In the Greek tradition, the constellation is represented as a vase from which a stream poured down to Piscis Austrinus.  The constellation Eridanus the river is sometimes identified as a river being poured by Aquarius.
