A life long pilot, Shawn began flying at the age of 17 and had a private pilot license before he had a driver’s license. He joined the Canadian Air Force and graduated from fixed wing flying training in His flight experience includes flying the Canadian version of the UH-1N, in a tactical support role with the Army. He also joined the Empire Test Pilot School in England in 1979 on an exchange tour with the Royal Air Force where he flew 6 different types of helicopters ranging from Chinooks to Gazelles. After returning to Canada for two years at Cold Lake, he left the Air Force and joined Bell Helicopter for the model 400 project in Fort Worth. He has worked at Transport Canada as a certification test pilot on the Bell 407, 430 and 427. Shawn also spent time with Mercy Air flying an EMS Bell 412. Shawn’s vast experience led him to be sought after for training the next generation of pilots. He spent 4 years instructing at the US Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, several years at the International Test Pilot School in England and in 2001 joined the National Test Pilot School in California. An accomplished writer, Shawn wrote for Rotor and Wing, Helicopter World, and now writes a monthly column for Vertical magazine. Shawn also published ‘The Art and Science of Flying Helicopters’ in 1996 and the ‘Cyclic and Collective’ in He currently lives in Philadelphia and is engaged in certifying helicopter simulators and providing expert advice on legal cases. Abstract: “ Issues with Civil helicopters performance Charts ” The performance charts presented to civilian helicopter pilots are of no use to them in their day- to-day operations. Surveys of helicopter pilots at seminars indicates that they never look at the charts. This is in direct contrast to the fixed wing operations. Many recent helicopters incidents can be traced to pilots trying to operate well outside the capabilities of their helicopter. The current charts do not take into account the over-specification capability of most turbine engines, denying payload in many instances. The end result is that helicopter pilots are not being well served by their flight manuals. Examples of civil and military performance charts and the differences will be used to show the problem. The lack of low-airspeed information is also has a detrimental effect on performance. Shawn Coyle “ Issues with Civil helicopters performance Charts ” AHS Dinner Meeting, December 9 th, 2008
