4 WHY ? This year, among more than 1,000 CGI members, about 1/10th is from Europe. Europe is a significant actor of globalisation, from an economic, diplomatic and social point of view. The crisis that hit our economic, social, and value systems emphasizes the questions of social responsibility. 9 Social Responsibility in Europe The notion of social business is paving the path to our future because it embraces both economic and social logics of action. "The perception that businesses must choose between turning a profit and improving the communities where they operate is outdated and irrelevant in our interdependent world," says President Clinton. “[The members of the Clinton Global Initiative] are demonstrating that investments in social and environmental programs in local communities and on other continents benefit both society and the bottom line." 10 Social Responsibility in Europe Europe has been developing pioneering projects in the field of social responsibility and social business. Among many others: - INDEX: Award in Denmark, promoting design that improves life - Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford University, hosting the Skoll World Forum - The Barcelona Centre for International Health Research, CRESIB : a global health research institute developed as a response to the new international health challenges of the 21st century. - Philips partners with NGOs and local entrepreneurs to manufacture and distribute healthy cooking stove to the base of the pyramid in India. - Grameen Danone Foods limited, providing nutrition to the base of the pyramid - Città dell’altra economia, in Rome, a centre for fair trade, fair finance, sustainable information technology and green energies - Gunter Pauli seeks solutions using nature's design principles as inspiration and launched the Zero Emission Research Institute, ZERI - etc..
