Writing Prompts Draw a self-portrait. What do you want to learn this year? What is your favorite subject? How do you get to school? Draw your family. Draw your house. What do you like to do on the playground? What's your favorite thing to do at school? At school I see… All About Me books or posters Write first names Write or draw school words

Centers Name flower Perforate school shapes Letter writing practice Number writing practice Stamp names or school words

Math Graph the transportation to and from school, the color of their eyes, the number of letters in their names, and their favorite colors. (Measurement & Data standards)

Activities Gingerbread Hunt After reading a gingerbread man-themed book, go on a hunt for it around the school. Have school personnel read clues or have them taped next to the destination. Introduce the classroom, health room, guidance office, principal and assistant principal’s offices, school psychologist’s office, cafeteria, playground, custodian’s office, and related arts areas.

Activities Make bookmarks that students can use throughout the year. Class puzzle Write names and decorate individual pieces. Put together to show unity as a class. Name puzzle Students write first names and cut into puzzle pieces Place in labeled baggies Great for pre-A/emergent readers!
