Percentages. What Are Percentages? A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. We use the percent sign % when representing numbers as a percentage.
Lesson Objective By the end of the lesson you should be able to work out the multipliers for percentage increases and decreases. You should also be able.

Working with Percentages. Writing percentages as fractions ‘Percent’ means ‘out of 100’. To write a percentage as a fraction we write it over a hundred.

50% 75% 1% 99% 0.1% 25% 5% 23% 10% 2.3% Pen (press esc to cancel) Here are some percentages and decimals. Match them up with their decimal equivalent.

Percentages with multipliers We can use these decimal equivalents to work out percentages on a calculator nice and quickly. Example. 63% of 765 The multiplier for this percentage is 0.63 ( notice it’s the same as the decimal equivalent) So 63% of 765 = 0.63 x 765 = Remember – to change a percentage to a decimal you have to divide it by 100!

Percentages with multipliers Here is another example Example. 7% of 48 The multiplier for this percentage is 0.07 ( not 0.7 as some people might think) So 7% of 48 = 0.07 x 48 = 3.36

6% of % of % of % of 340 3% of % of Pen (press esc to cancel) Now try these using your calculator

Percentages with multipliers Now it’s your turn. Use your calculator and what you now know about multipliers to complete the crossnumber.
