Course Objectives To familiarize the students with the practical aspects of computer engineering. Application of knowledge and techniques learnt in the courses to real engineering problems and to test out and enrich one’s understanding, knowledge and skills. To help students in exploring career opportunities in their areas of interest. To gives an insight into the working of the real organization To provide an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams To shaping students as competent managers for tomorrow. Course general information This course is a non-credit one >> Letter grade will be satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U). As a part of training, students are required to submit a report and give a presentation to the committee. The Report + Log-Book, and Presentation are the basis for evaluation of the training. When should I take CMPE400? As part of curriculum you are required to undergo summer Training for 40 days in an industry after the end of 6th semester. You can start the training after the final exam. Why after the end of the 6th semester: you will have enough information to keep track the industry: - Programming languages: C++, C#, Java, … - Network, computer architecture; - Databases, internet programming, …. You can perform - 40 working days in one summer or 20 working days (in February) + 20 working days (in summer) [in this case two reports + two presentations are required]. What type of training? - should be related to software and/or hardware. Network management, Developing software's, Database management, Communication systems, Microcontrollers, Web security. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 6

What type of training? Not acceptable work: - doing a survey on some packages without performing an application, - giving a survey on the company without doing an individual work, - helping others with word processing, - selling products, - Performing technician-like duties: install software, format HD, web-page creation, .. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 7

Application procedure - Obtain the application letter from the computer engineering department. Find suitable company. Get the acceptance letter. - Fax the acceptance letter by Fax no.: 00 90 392 365 0711 Or - send the acceptance letter by e-mail to: e-mail: omar.ramadan@emu.edu.tr - Fill insurance form (3 copies) - Submit the forms to Registrars Office at least 15 days before the practice starting date. Application procedure - Start the training: record daily activity in the log-book. - Upon completion, the logbook must be - signed and stamped by the company; - delivered in a closed and sealed envelop; - should contain ABET survey filled by the company. - Write the report. - Submit the report and the logbook to the committee. - Prepare your presentation. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 9

Report format - As any other technical report, it must include: 1. Title page – cover page; 2. Table of contents; 3. Introduction; 4. Information about the company; 5. Problem definition; 6. The work done; 7. Conclusion; 8. References; 8.  Appendices (codes, pictures, …. ). - Should contain 20 – 40 pages, excluding appendices. - Hand-writing is non-acceptable. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 10

Summer training evaluation procedure Submit one copy of the report and log-book to the committee . Reports will be checked by the committee. The committee will form juries for the training presentations. Each student will present the work done and the jury will evaluate - The work done; - Student knowledge( in the work done) and his presentation; - The report . The jury will fill Summer Training Evaluation Form and a final decision will be submitted to the committee: S (satisfactory), U (unsatisfactory) Re-write may be given for small modification Upon the jury report, the committee will submit the letter grade to the registrar office. Note: No make-up will be given for the presentation CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 11

What to do and not to do in the training? Do’s- Punctuality (timeliness), Maintaining healthy relationship with the people in organization. Understanding the work culture. Obeying direct orders from the seniors. Showing a sense of belonging with the organization. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 12

Do’s and Don’ts in the Training Do not take the training lightly. Do not give an impression that you are doing the training just for the sake of it. Put your heart and soul. Do not involve in internal politics. Do not reveal you weaknesses. Do not lie to your seniors. Do not waste your time. Do not copy any material. Be original. Do not go for leave unless it is necessary. Do not ask for favors. CMPE400/BLGM400/CMSE400: Summer training 13

Frequently asked questions In which companies the summer practice can be done? - Must have at least one computer and/or electrical engineer. - Your job must be related to the computer engineering discipline. - Advised: well-known and big companies: to get more experience.
