Problem Statement At the hospital, Central Sterile Processing prepares instruments for the operating rooms to be used throughout the day. Sometimes, additional or different instruments are needed, requiring nurses to call CSP, sometimes so much that the phone lines are completely tied up. Need a better form of communicating and logging requests.

Floor Layout Decontamination Operating Rooms 1- 7 Operating Rooms Sterilization Terminals

Intended Solution Create a program to manage these requests in a digital format This program will have nurses create the requests, while Central Sterile Processing(CSP) can update the status of the instrument throughout its cleaning process. This program will organize the requests as well for CSP staff, helping them increase their work efficiency.

Concept Sketch Operating RoomDecontamination Room Clean Core Request Received Request #: 31 Status: Decontaminating Request #: 31 Status: Decontaminating Request #: 31 Status: Sterilizing Request #: 31 Status: Sterilizing Ready for Sterilization Instrument sent to Clean Core Request #: 31 Status: Complete Request #: 31 Status: Complete Request #: 31 Status: Complete Instrument sent to OR Nurses receive pick up notification Request #: 31 Status: Ready for pick up Request #: 31 Status: Ready for pick up Nurses pick up instruments and clear the request

Functional Requirements Operating Room Terminal ◦ Create, edit, and cancel request ◦ Instant update/event-based status update Decontamination Room Terminal ◦ View request information ◦ Instant update/event based status update Clean Core Terminal ◦ View request information ◦ Instant update/event based status update CSP Coordinator Terminal ◦ View request status and information ◦ Cancel request

Non-Functional Requirements User friendly ◦ Straight forward user interface ◦ Appropriate font color and size Effective display ◦ Auto arrange with priority ◦ Request “blinking” Reliability ◦ Auto-matched technique

Market Survey Most product in current market is tracking system ◦ Rarely found program that only has requesting system Current Requesting System at Methodist ◦ Phone call  Calls get ignore when decontamination staffs are busy ◦ Tongue depressor  Decontamination staff might not notice about it  Tongue depressor written area is very limited

Constraints and Considerations ◦ Time ◦ Cost ◦ Program complexity ◦ Monitors ◦ Use of existing SPM database  Security Request (SR2 form) ◦ Compatibility/Issues  Touch screens with Windows XP  Firewall Issues involved in networking

Potential Risks & Mitigations Change of Project Requirements Change of Management Reaching Project Checkpoint in Timely Manner Overbudget

Cost Estimate Budget: $2,000 (grant) Available Total Hardware ◦ 3 Touch screen Monitors(< $900) Labor $1,000 (100 $10/hour) Workstation computers available Total: < $1900
