What does that mean? It means it's a great way to stay connected and share information.

Popularity of Social Media According to the analysts at Hitwise, social networks in general are more popular than search engines in some parts of the world Facebook’s overall web traffic pulled ahead of Google’s for the first time in the U.S. in March of this year. Facebook dominates the current crop of social networks, accounting for the majority (55%) of all social site visits. When compared to the wider web, Google gets around 9.3% of all web traffic, while Facebook captures just over 7%

Why Is Social Media Important If your kids are awake they are probably online The average young American now spends every waking minute – except the time in school – using a smart phone, computer, TV or other electronic device according to a new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation. Those ages 8 – 18 spend more than 7 hours a day with such devices. And that does not count the hour and a half that youths spend texting or talking on their phones

Why Is Social Media Important With year olds – They have higher demands!! – Growing up online has shaped how teens and young adults receive, process and act on information. They expect information to be brief, instant and always on (there are no office hours)

Information & Credibility (?) The vast majority of people report the opinion they trust most is from ‘someone like me’. For the first time in our history, peers have bested the wisdom of experts Peer endorsement is the single greatest decision-making accelerant. Through Social Media, peer influence cycles are happening at a velocity never before seen. Decision making is clearly becoming more social

Why Use Social Media For many of the same reasons companies invest in more traditional marketing and advertising – Create awareness – Encourage connection – Inspire loyalty – Build powerful relations – Create ambassadors for your work & ministry – Create stronger reputations & relationships – Recruit Supporters

What Does Social Media Provide Social Media provides context, pictures, words, shared meaning, and information Facebook, Twitter (information, announcements) YouTube (Education and Images) Linked In – Relationships and Credibility

Using Facebook A subtle faux pas can affect your online reputation and even future job path, as your friend list on Facebook includes both personal and professional contacts. Know what you are sending out. Read Before you post or share items – some items look good but may cause you more harm than good.

Using Facebook Carefully consider who you allow to be your friend. Make sure your friends don’t post inappropriate content to your wall or tag you in inappropriate photos. Don’t live a double (on-line) life. Many professionals decide to have one public professional Facebook page and one private personal page. You may consider using a fictitious name or nickname. Keep it clean and civilized. Don’t go posting potentially insulting or discriminating content or jokes, photos or status that include the use of alcohol or illegal substance, using profanity. Everything you post on the internet can become public record, sarcasm is hard to detect via social media profiles and Facebook privacy settings change ALL the time. change ALL the time

Twitter Twitter is a social network where you post short bursts of thoughts and information It has become the single most talked about Web site since Facebook and grew 1,382% in the past year.. Twitter revolutionized social media by making it simple for the world to communicate in real time. Think of it as a cross between text messaging, instant messaging and blogging

Twitter You can also use Twitter to repost “re-tweet”/share information and also to network information. You can connect your Twitter feed to your Facebook. Most Smart Phones also have Apps to help you with this

Information that You Post Keep in mind that everything you tweet or post lends to — or takes away from — your integrity and influence.
