November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer8 Production schedule Numbers from February 2004 – slightly changing with time Baseline change: 80 strings  70 strings + 10 strings from contingency

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer9 All Production sites successfully participated in the shipment of good DOMs to the Pole (integration and FAT) Anticipate total of 280 DOMs shipped by end of Nov, Current total is 248. Good team established which lays the groundwork for further DOM production success PY3 DOM Production Summary Production readiness review Jim Haugen (Production manager) :

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer10 Integrated DOM

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer11 Following docs are ready for signoff : Integration procedures Production sides got certified in May 2004 by US team from Project office

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer12 PY3 DOM shipment summary A : IceTop DOM T : terminated DOM U : unterminated DOM, but available

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer13 PY4 DOM Production Plan

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer14 DOM Production and Testing at DESY

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer15 - Produce 1300 DOM’s in 5 years - Test all DOM’s in Dark Freezer at -40  C - Ship necessary number of DOM’s per year to South Pole

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer16

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer17

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer18

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer19

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer20 1 st Produktion End of February: First 2 kits of electronic boards arrived at Zeuthen : First DOM produced at DESY

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer21 6 kits of electronic boards (DOM rev4.2) arrived in Zeuthen beginning of May Started test production of 6 complete modules immediately  tested technology and production chain  trained technicians All 6 DOM’s produced successfully in foreseen time After 6 months DOM’s still in very good shape (gel) Tests limited due to old revision of main boards (software compatibility) 2 nd Produktion

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer22 3 rd Produktion Produce and test 60 DOM’s in July-August-September 2004 Needs special preparation : more jigs for gel pouring (+3)  got +1 mid of August  60 DOM’s pre-potted 1.9. DOM-mainboards are expected to arrive only at end of July  arrived DOM’s should go to South Pole (testing finished at 9/20)  25 DOM’s ready for testing at testing finished shipping done Plan from March 2004 :

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer23 3 rd Produktion Got mainboards:  ,30.10.,7.11.  all used for completion of pre- potted modules Got request to start second DFL test at the 4 th of November Have now still 6 complete DOM’s + 9 pre-potted DOM’s in store Final 9 mainboards are promised to arrive in the next days

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer24 DFL Testing Testing system for 2004 will not be fully automatised Light source 405 nm available and tested Light source for lower wavelength under study (nitrogen laser? +splitter? + dyes?) Ligth distribution system under development (DESY+Mainz) (2 test channels available) DOM trigger (external trigger signal + optical monitor) planned to be build (DESY+Mainz) DFL electrical cabling to be done worked much better than expected in March 2004

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer25 DFL Testing Final Acceptance Test (FAT) : US system completely copied in Sweden and Germany Works mainly computer steered Uses 3 light sources (laser, W-lamp+monochromator, LED) Light distribution per glass fiber bundle About 12 hours of data taking per cycle Full test ~ 14 days, cycles at +20, -45, -20, +20, -45, +20 degrees

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer26 DESY FAT1 25 DOMs in DFL 1 DOM HUB 8 DOR Cards 1 filter box 4 breakout boxes Light system Laser W-Lamp + monochromator LED Fiber system

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer27 Basic functionality Cold/Warm Reboot (+) Local coincidence (-/+) Monitoring (+) STF Test (+) Test PMT Meas. (+) DOMCAL (+) TestDAQ Dark Noise (+) PMT Gain vs. HV (+) Linearity Test(-/+) Optical Sensitivity (-/+) Pedestal Pattern (+) Time Resolution (-/+) Stability Test Monitoring (+/-) Time Resolution & (+) Pedestal Pattern Test (-) All this tests are done for: +20˚C, -45˚C, -20˚C, +25˚C, -45˚C, -25˚C, +20˚C For more details: Test schedule

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer Simple Test Framework (STF): Few problems at room temperature More failures at low temperature Mainly flasher brightness, width, pmt HV ramp, stability Reboot: No problem at room temperature Only one communication failure at low temperature

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer29 RESULTS of DESY FAT1+FAT2 Failed due to gel inspection 9,25,34

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer30 Production Quality at DESY 1+6 Test-DOM’s : all fine 25 DOM’s from FAT1:1 reboot failure 3 gel failures 21 DOM’s from FAT2:1 flasher board failure 13 gel failures ! Hard- and software design ok Unsolved : gel problem, similar result in Sweden, different in US Most probable reason: too early pre-potting before sealing specific for irregular production in 2004

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer31 Production schedule 2005

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer32 Production  2004 Regular production was impossible due to delivery problems of mainboards from the US Nevertheless 280 DOM’s for the deployment of four strings are produced, successfully tested and shipped All but one production steps under control Only unsolved problem: gel behaviour  needs further studies DOM testing went much better than expected Improvement of testing equipment under study

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer33 Production Start up problems hopefully overcome - Producers well trained - Production capacity sufficient - Logistic proven - Customs problems “solved”  but depend all the time strongly on delivery of components from outside
