Our school organizes many colorful activities, like playing football, basketball and ping pang, which are good for our health. Besides, we can join many clubs organized by ourselves. Step I Learning about school life in the UK Look at the four pictures about the lives of British high school on Page1 and describe them in pairs.

What about school life in other countries?

Huge campus & low-rise buildings Lockers for every student Fewer students in each class A lot of outdoor activities

We can see huge campus and low buildings in this picture. This is the biggest difference from schools in China. There are rows of lockers by the classroom for students to put their books and other belongings.

Fewer students in a larger classroom sit in two lines and face to face, eager to answer questions. When classes are over in the afternoon, students in the UK take part in different outdoor activities, which makes their school life more interesting.

Step II Comparison Compare the school life in the UK with that in China and fill in the table.

in the United Kingdom in China Huge campus &low-rise buildings Large campus and taller buildings Lockers for every student None have such equipment.

in the United Kingdom in China Fewer students in each class At ease with our teachers Be friendly to each other

In the UKIn China Huge campus & low buildings Lockers for every student Small class sizes A lot of outdoor activities Most schools in China do not have such equipment students sit in several lines facing the blackboard, not very active. We have large campuses but taller buildings, at least three storeys. Some schools provide chances for students and encourage them to do outdoor activities; some schools burden students with too much homework, making students have no time to go out.

Step III Writing Work in groups of four. Each student chooses one aspect. Write a short passage comparing schools in China and the UK from the chosen aspect. Present in a group.

We can see huge campus and low buildings in this picture. This is the biggest difference from schools in China. Schools in China usually have a large enough campus to make sure students have enough space to study and play in. But most school buildings are taller, at least four storeys.

There are rows of lockers by the classroom for students to put their books and other belongings while in China students bring what they need for lessons to school and then take something necessary back home after school. Most schools do not have the equipment in the classroom.

There are fewer students in a class in the UK, no more than 30 per class. There are usually more students in our country, perhaps 50 to 60 per class. Some schools are beginning to limit the number of students in each class.

When classes are over in the afternoon, students in the UK take part in different outdoor activities, which makes their school life more interesting. It is similar in some urban schools in China. Schools there lay emphasis on students overall development. However, in some schools, students are burdened with too much homework. They have no time to relax after a whole day study in the classroom.

2. Do you know any further differences between the schools in the United Kingdom and China? 1. What kind of school activities do you enjoy?

3. What is your dream school life like? Teachers? Classmates? Relationship?

teachers fair patient learned energeti c understandin g humorous

classmates strong-willed diligen t open- minded energeti c competitive cooperative civilized

teachers students love understand respect learn help encourage

wisdom courage belief luck diligence perseverancedetermination cooperation competence confidence intelligence

Confucius

Where there is a will, there is a way. Perseverance is the only road to success.

2. How should we adjust to high school life as quickly as possible? Be optimistic Turn to teachers for help Talk about your problems with your parents or friends Get to the school medical center for professional advice

The rules in my class No eating or drinking. Try your best to speak English in class. Speak loudly and clearly. Listen to others carefully, no laughing. Never forget or delay your homework (oral &written)

Prepare 1. Dictionary 2. Notebook 3. Dictation book 4. Composition book 5. Error correction book

1.Write down your own opinion on what your dream school is like in about 100 words. 2. Write a short passage about the differences between the lives of British and Chinese high school students. (about 120 words)

In the UK, it is rare to see tall buildings on UK school campuses, while in China the buildings are quite tall. In the UK, there are lockers for students belongings but in our classroom there are not. In the UK students are active and eager to answer the teachers questions. In most cases, teachers treat students as their equals. In China, however, its difficult to do so because of the large number of students. Chinese students have to study for lots of exams, making them have no free time to

develop their interests in different areas. British students are lucky, as they have more free time to develop their potential and communicate with their peers. In a word, students and teachers in both countries have established a good relationship with each other. Therefore, students feel comfortable with their teachers both in and out of class.
