City Hall Chambers

From the Ceiling, to the Floor, this room is an architectural joy! The light bulbs alone are each surrounded and kept in place by gold rosettes. The Chairperson’s desk is intricately carved mahogany.

Courtyard City Hall's architect, John McArthur, wanted all the offices in his design to front on a corridor and also receive natural sunlight. His solution was the courtyard. Located in the exact geographical center of William Penn's original Philadelphia city plan, the courtyard is where Market Street, Philadelphia's main East-West thoroughfare, intersects Broad Street, the main North- South city artery. A huge compass, with the original city map depicted in its center, has been painted to give visitors a visual orientation to the city and the building.

Tower Panoramic View The statue of William Penn is the tallest sculpture on top of any building in the world. He is 37 feet tall, weighs 27 tons and is made of bronze. The 50-ton clocks each have a face of 26 feet in diameter, larger than the clocks on London’s towers of the House of Parliament, often referred to as Big Ben. The clocks were originally powered by compressed air. Today, each clock is powered by a single electric synchronous motor. Each hour hand is 12.5 feet long and weighs 175 pounds. The clock’s faces were first lit by 552 light bulbs. Today gold-colored fluorescent tubes produce the glow of four moons in the sky.  Tower height from street to top of Statue: 547 ft 11½ in.  Tower height from foundation : 571 ft 5¼ in.  Wall thickness at tower foundation: 22 feet Dimensions at base: 90 ft. x 90 ft.  Tower floors: 44(22 levels)  Tower electric elevator built: 1901  Steps to observation deck: 605 from 7th floor  Tower foundation: Concrete 8 ft. 6 in. thick 100 ft square 23 ft. 6 in. below ground level

JFK Plaza JFK Plaza was the brainchild of famed Philadelphia City Planner Edmund Bacon and was designed by architect Vincent Kling. The park is located across from City Hall and serves as the gateway to Fairmount Park's Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the Parkway / Museums District. Built in 1965, the park sits atop an underground parking garage. The main features of the plaza include curved granite steps and a majestic fountain added in The nickname LOVE Park comes from the LOVE sculpture which overlooks the plaza. The world famous sculpture, designed by Robert Indiana, was first placed in the plaza as part of the United States' Bicentennial Celebration in Surrounding Sculpture

Comcast Center  Architect: Robert A.M. Stern  Height: 975 ft.  Floors: 57  Elevators: 35  Ceilings: ft.  Tallest LEED certified green building featuring tall windows for natural light, waterless urinals (saving over a million gallons of water a year), internally managed lighting scheme View from City Hall window

The Comcast Experience Video Wall is the largest four-millimeter LED screen in the world. Spanning 83.3 feet wide by 25.4 feet high, the 2,100 square-foot video wall brings original programming to visitors 18 hours a day. The wall displays thousands of unique hours of programming, created exclusively for The Comcast Experience Video Wall. A half-acre landscaped park facing JFK Boulevard, named Liberty Plaza, includes a fountain built into the sidewalk. A 110 ft atrium welcomes commuters from Suburban Station into the building and the Plaza.

From the top down, it goes plaza, concourse, platforms, tracks. On the plaza itself: granite, mortar, concrete, insulation, and foam blocks which help to lighten the load. The concrete layer has an elaborate maze-like piping system which utilizes heated recycled water to act as a snow-melting device during winter months. Philly Grows Up!
