CONTRIBUTIONS OF ANCIENT GREECE

Many ideas and inventions influenced Europe and its peoples as they developed.

Greek ideals have spread all over the world. Some are still evident in our culture today. Government Philosophers (thinkers) Olympics Writing Alphabet Science and Medicine

GOVERNMENT One of the most prominent gifts from Greece is the beginning of a democratic form of government. Democracy is when ordinary citizens get to vote for their leaders. Athens had the first democratic constitution.

OLYMPICS Greeks believed in having a fit body. Held once every four years. People from all over the world come to compete in athletic events.

WRITING Greeks were the first civilization to record their history as it happened. Before it was written, it was passed by word of mouth and stories became exaggerated. From this came drama. Two types called tragedies and comedies.

SCIENCE AND MEDICINE Developed sophisticated medical treatments for all kinds of diseases. Treatments were based on practical research. Hippocrates described as the founder of modern medicine.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT Was a great warrior who spread Greek culture
