If you use these in your essay, you must cite them. Do not include texts in your works cited, if you did not use them in your essay.

One book and One author Quote alone: “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green,” is evidence for this point (Steinbeck 3). Quote with author: As Steinbeck writes, “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green” (3). Quote with author and page: As Steinbeck writes on page 3, “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green.” The citation is a part of the sentence; therefore, the period goes OUTSIDE the quotations! There are different ways to blend in quotes and evidence – they should be blended, not just stuck in the middle of text. Here are some varied ways you can seamlessly use quotes in your essay. Each example is cited differently. Depending on what you say in your sentence, you may/may not have to include the parenthetical citation. YOU MUST DEMONSTRATE that you KNOW how to do this in your paper. Do not avoid it by using the 3rd option every time. That’s repetitive and uninteresting.

Articles with one Author Quote alone: In the article Moral Issues that Divide Us, the evidence states, “Euthanasia literally means good death” (Fieser 1). Quote with author: In the article Moral Issues that Divide Us by James Fieser, he states, “Euthanasia literally means good death” (1). Quote with author and page: In the article Moral Issues that Divide Us by James Fieser on page 1, he states, “Euthanasia literally means good death.” This is pretty much the same, just with a different kind of text. The same rules apply.

Article with No Author Quote alone: Within an article about euthanasia, it claims, “It is the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit” (Euthanasia 2). Quote with title: Within the article “Euthanasia Definitions: Pros and Cons,” it claims, “It is the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit” (2). You should only use the first important word from the title of the article. If you do not have the author’s name, use the first important word of the article/text. In this case, Euthanasia.

How to quote dialogue…pg 469 in writer’s Inc. “Lennie asked, ‘Do I still get to tend the rabbits?’” (Steinbeck 100). “’Do I still get to tend the rabbits?’ Lennie asked” (Steinbeck 100). As Lennie asks, “’Do I still get to tend the Rabbits?’” (Steinbeck 100).

Electronic sources Website – from Purdue OWL Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access. This next information comes directly from the OWL, a Purdue website that has every kind of citation one can imagine. It’s pretty much my favorite resource! The following is for those of you who would like to find other research than the information I have given to you. If you use a website, this is the information you will need.

Electronic Sources Webpage For an individual page on a Web site, list the author or alias if known, followed by the information covered above for entire Web sites. Remember to use n.p. if no publisher name is available and n.d. if no publishing date is given. For a single page on a website, this is the proper citation format.

I can’t give you every single scenario – there are too many. Fortunately these resources are available. Do NOT rely on easybib or citation machine – they are outdated and typically they are wrong because the person entering the info (you) does not include the essential information correclty.

Now for the works cited – this is different than a bibliography. A works cited page includes the “works” you “cited” within your paper. Turn and talk about observations you can make from this “works cited page.”

Works Cited Page Basic Rules Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper. Label the page Works Cited (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page. Alphabetize by author last name and/or title when appropriate. Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries. Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations five spaces so that you create a hanging indent. List page numbers of sources efficiently, when needed. If you refer to a journal article that appeared on pages 225 through 250, list the page numbers on your Works Cited page as 225-50. You must list the medium of the source (print, electronic, etc). Do not even try to write all of this down. It’s on our calendar. This is also taken directly from OWL. These are the basics of a works cited page.

Works Cited Page Basic Format The author’s name or a book with a single author's name appears in last name, first name format. The basic form for a book citation is: Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Notice that it is dbl spaced when it goes to a second line and it is indented.
