Ellis Island

Big Cities These poor immigrants moved to BIG CITIES, like New York and Chicago and worked as unskilled labor. Side note: cities became known as CULTURALLY PLURAL (meaning many cultures)

Industrialization and Immigration caused the following problems: Urbanization: People moving into large cities, usually causing over population! Discrimination: Prejudice based on race … immigrant’s received poor living arrangements and lower pay! Urban Slums: Term given to parts of city that became over populated, unsanitary, polluted and noisy!

Urban Slums

Finally there is a change! Workers banded together to demand better pay and working conditions! These groups are called labor unions! One of the most famous labor unions was the American Federation of Labor. It was led by a man named Samuel Gompers! The goal of Samuel Gompers was … To improve unregulated working conditions – to get better working conditions and higher wages by using strikes (work stoppages)

There were many strikes that turned into violent conflicts! Cause Event and Info Effect Poor Working conditions and company lowered wages!! Labor union staged a strike!! PULLMAN STRIKE of 1894 Pullman Railcar Company located in Chicago Company fires all that worked in the labor union. President of USA sends the US army to stop the violence!
