New Literacies Jessica Gibbs, Erika Mayoral, & Stephanie Miller

Literacy and New Literacy  The traditional definition of literacy is the ability to read and write. (New Oxford American Dictionary)  New literacy can consist of different types of media like television, video chats, and the internet.

Television  Usually television is used as a source of entertainment or news, but it can also be used for education.  Cable offers channels that are educational like the History Channel, Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, and many others.  The downside is that not everyone can afford cable television.

Cost and example of programs offered  Different cable companies offer packaging deals like cable and high speed internet  Comcast offers cable for $29.99 a month ( ast/cable-tv/prices) ast/cable-tv/prices  Channels like History channel and Discovery channel offer programs like WWII in HD and Planet Earth respectively.  Look online to see a list of their programs  

Video and the Classroom  Online classes have been steadily taking over the education system  Video technologies have helped to make this an easier method of education, while making the online classroom more successful.  Teachers can video chat with their students through a number of free programs  Skype, iChat, Oovoo

 Another way teachers can incorporate video to a classroom is through instructional videos  Teachers can record videos of themselves and put the videos on their websites for the students to access when they need them  Vimeo could be used or the teacher could create a YouTube channel for the class

Internet  Internet is used for many different things. For one internet is used for entertainment and research.  Another important thing that internet is important for is the ability to communicate with our peers through instant chats.  There are many different sites that help both students and teachers gain better knowledge on a better subject. It also helps teachers make a lesson plan better.  Some downsides of the internet is that you have to have a internet ready phone or a computer to use. These products are very pricy.

Cost and programs used for internet  Like television cable companies have deals for their internet services.  certain companies will provide the internet for you but they will also make you have their cable TV services as well  Some dial up companies still exist  NetZero, Juno, and EarthLink  Wi-Fi is the most popular and these are sold by cable companies to their providers
