Personal and Professional Development - Term 3 Goals for session Further re-enforce your understanding of: Personal Development Planning Process Personal & Professional Development File Submissions and Assessment Criteria The value of industry and careers research And some approaches

Career and Industry Research Why is this valuable? How to do this further What are the sources and methods What do you currently know? Or not…

Researching Careers Prospects including job descriptions, salaries etc www.prospects.ac.uk Jobs, work experience, careers information www.arts.ac.uk/student/careers Visual and Audio Broadcast careers Skillset www.skillset.org/careers Ideas Factory http://www.ideasfactory.com/careers

Assessment Criteria Depth of reflection in a review of strengths and weaknesses in relation to learning and career development; (LO1) Level of ability to research potential career paths; (LO1, LO4) Level of development of a record of skills and understanding, from both the course and wider activities; (LO2) Weight of evidence of learning and personal and professional development; (LO3) Degree of understanding of the application of skills to new situations. (LO4)

Developing your PPD File Use a wider RANGE of examples Explain these in more DEPTH Make more CONNECTIONS

Example “I have improved my ability to work as part of a team this year.” How can this be improved by adding DEPTH CONNECTIONS

‘I work well in teams - an example was being a member of a team of 5 for a recent project. For this the objective was to… (adding some depth) The roles I take in a team are sometimes to take the lead and other times to be the thoughtful and reflective one, asking useful questions. (more general depth) I understand from researching my long term career goal to be a… through asking questions and observing on a recent placement, that team work is crucial. (connection) An example of me leading a team was … (adding range) A challenge that I found working in a team included where 2 members were unwilling to attend meetings- What I suggested was…(more depth)

Smarter Goals Specific: State exactly what you want to achieve, in detail Measurable: State how you will know that you’ve achieved it Achievable: Make sure that it’s in your control and possible for you Realistic: Can you do this with the time / resources that are available? Time-bound: Set clear deadlines: final and at points along the way Enjoyable: Consider how this can be as enjoyable as possible Rewarding: Consider how you will get the most benefit

Example Goals - Continued I want to write professionally, probably as a free lance. The main area I’m interested in is writing comedy, for television, but I realise that this is the most competitive medium and I may well have to write in a number of different mediums such as for stand ups, radio, print and the web. Also I may have to learn to write for different genres – not just comedy in order to make a living, especially to start with. It will be very important for me to develop a reputation for the quality of my writing but also for being dependable and flexible.

Example Goals - Continued Also a network of contacts will be important. This causes me a difficulty because I find it hard to talk about myself so I will try to improve on this by practicing on my course but also by trying to focus on my ideas not on me and also by choosing to contact people that seem similar to me. Finding others to work with who are also trying to build a reputation will also help. New Goals Develop contacts & improve how I present my ideas.

Assessing Self Evaluation Level of development of a record of skills and understanding, from both the course and wider activities; (LO2) 

Areas for Self Evaluation Attitude to and Skills as a Learner Use work on Learning Styles - what are your preferences How independent are you and how well do you work with others Skills - Transferable & Subject Specific Your interests / passions Things that you have realised from your course Things that you most want / need to change

Example Self Evaluation I am good at developing ideas. I can come up with lots of ideas by myself although I find it easier to choose which idea is best to work on by discusssing them with others. I am not as good at presenting my ideas – I am pretty good at doing this with friends and when chatting but not so good when I’m in front of tutors. I find that it’s difficult to convince people of how good my ideas are and sometimes this makes me doubt them (and also my mind goes blank).

Self evaluation - Continued I have found that I’m better at organising and administration than I thought that I would be. I can work out the budgets and shooting schedule. In unit xxx and projects xxx I have taken responsibility for these aspects… This has made me think that I might be able to work as a producer or production manager…

Self Evaluation and Reflection ‘The greatest unexplored territory in the world is the space between our ears’ O’ Brien “People with a high level of personal mastery are acutely aware of their ignorance, their incompetence, their growth areas………… And they are deeply self-confident” Senge: The Fifth Discipline.

Researching Careers Prospects including job descriptions, salaries etc www.prospects.ac.uk Jobs, work experience, careers information www.arts.ac.uk/student/careers Visual and Audio Broadcast careers Skillset www.skillset.org/careers Ideas Factory http://www.ideasfactory.com/careers

Television production assistant: Entry requirements Need to show evidence of the following: excellent communication skills; sound administrative and organisational skills; fast, accurate word processing skills; good numeracy and the ability to manage a budget; enthusiasm; stamina and persistence; initiative and adaptability; the ability to work with a wide range of people; problem-solving skills; the ability to prioritise and cope with last-minute changes, eg to scripts, whilst under pressure

Reflection One of the most interesting projects we have done so far was in xxx unit. We had to produce a short series of vox pops about a topic of our choice. We did this working in groups of 4. We had to do all stages of this including planning, doing a shooting schedule and risk assessment, through to editing. One of the things I learned was how many stages and possible problems there are to even a fairly simple shoot. In this case working in a group was a big help because it meant we could take different roles and while one person was operating the camera another was doing sound and another was setting up the interviews.

Reflection We did a group project for xxx this didn’t go as well. It was a longer project and we had to decide the different roles among ourselves. We couldn’t agree on the best idea to work on and some of the group went off on their own idea. I found it hard to get my point across without making everyone more tense. In the end we all worked on this idea and produced a reasonable piece because near the end we just got on with it. This surprised me because I thought we were going to work well together. I learnt from this that working in groups can be harder than it seems especially when you don’t have clear roles. In future I will try to make sure that we have a way of deciding things and maybe spend more time just brainstorming ideas before trying to decide.

Evaluating work Connections Depth Range

Levels of Description From this I understood that it’s important to work with people with a range of skills & experience and more of what the roles involve. We took on different roles, such as camera operator, director, and interviewer… We had to produce a short documentary about the college. We filmed it in 1 day and took 2 days to edit
