Introduction to Photography: The Exposure Triangle Ms. Whiteside * Circle High School Photo by V Whiteside

Getting to Know the Camera Point and Shoot vs. DSLR show and tell Digital Camera – a camera that captures the photo not on film, but in an electronic imaging sensor that take the place of film. Photo by M Fowler

Camera Parts Show and tell: Power, zoom, lens, shooting modes, viewfinder, display, battery, camera card, charger. Photo by S Breault

Camera Modes Automatic vs Manual We will use automatic and experiment with preset alternate modes.

The Exposure Triangle Aperture, Shutter Speed, & ISO Aperture-small, circular opening inside the leans that can change in diameter to control the amount of light reaching the camera’s sensor as a picture is taken.

They all work together.

Aperture Depth of Field changes

Aperature F-stops The lower the number, the larger the aperature = less light in the camera. The higher the number, the smaller the aperature = more light in the camera. So, f/2.8 is larger than at f/8.

Shutter Speed - used to stop action or slow it (depending on the speed setting used) Ex. Splashing pool water, running basketball player, flying hair away from face, etc. Ex. Blurry background of traffic, clear point of focus in the foreground

Slow shutter speed

Slow Shutter Speed

Fast shutter speed

ISO -a rating of film’s sensitivity to light (light sensor) Typically automatically adjusted when using AUTO on point and shoot cameras. Increase the ISO, photo quality decreases Becomes grainy or “noisy.”

ISO (light sensor setting)

Want to work in “manual mode?”
