Presentation transcript:

Introduction This experiment was done to understand how are animal cells and plant cells are different. This experiment was also to help me understand cells better. Materials Microscope Plastic Slides Glass Slides Blue Dye Yellow Dye Onion Plant Tropical Plant Skin Cell or Cheek Cell Method First, we took samples from different objects, like plants and skin. Then we put each sample onto a glass slide with a a dye to take a closer look. For the human cells, we used a blue dye to be able to look at the cells better. For the plant cells, we used a yellow dye and the blue dye. After recording what we saw, we took pictures of the each cell at different amount of magnification. After we did our experiment, i wanted to know more about cells so i did some research to help. Results From doing the investigation we were able to learn about cells and the difference of animal and plant cells. We learned that all living organism on earth is built upon cells and that there are parts that build up a cell, like proteins and organelles. There are also larger pieces called tissues and systems. I learned that the main purpose of a cell is to organize. Cells hold a variety of pieces and each cell has a different set of functions. It is easier for an organism to grow and survive when cells are present. We also learned the difference between animal and plants cells. As shown in the table to the right. We also took pictures of the cells close up. Figure 1. Common Human cell. CharacteristicsPlant CellAnimal Cell Cell SizeLargeSmaller than plant cells Cell ShapeRectangularCircular VacuolesA single centrally located vacuole. It takes up almost 90% of the cell volume. The vacuole stores water and maintains turgidity of the cell. If any, there are a number of small vacuoles spread throughout the cytoplasm that store water, ions and waste materials. Cell WallA rigid cell wall (made of cellulose) is present around a plant cell that helps it maintain its shape. Cell wall is absent. This allows animal cells to adopt different shapes. ChloroplastsPresent. Chlorophyll is the pigment that traps sun's energy which is utilized by plants to make food through the process of photosynthesis. This pigment is present in the chloroplasts. Absent. As animals lack this pigment, they cannot make their own food. Cell DivisionCell division takes place by the formation of cell plate in the center of the dividing cell. This becomes the cell wall between the two daughter cells. Animal cells divide with the formation of a cleavage furrow. This is formed as the chromosomes move to the ends of the microtubule spindle formed by the centrioles. CentriolesPresent only in lower forms. Plants instead have microtubule organizing centers that produce the microtubules. Present. Centrioles help in division of animal cells by creating microtubule spindles that pull the chromosomes to opposite ends for cell division to occur. CentrosomeAbsent. Instead there are two small clear areas called polar caps. Present LysosomesAbsentPresent. Lysosomes are vesicles that contain enzymes that destroy dead cell organelles and other cells debis. Golgi BodiesIn place of golgi bodies, its sub units known as dictyosomes are present. Complicated golgi bodies are located close to the nucleus. Plant Animal Conclusion In conclusion, by doing our expirement, we have found out the main idea behind the cell, which is to organize, and the main differences between plant and animal cells. We also were able to get a closer look of the inside of a cell through a microscope for a better understanding. We were also able to learn how to use a microscope and what dyes to use when examining objects under a microscope.
