Cell Discovery and Theory

The Cell Theory All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living organisms. Cells arise only from previously existing cells.

Microscope is the main tool Light microscope used in classroom. Can view living subjects, but magnification only goes to 1000X (400X). Electron microscope uses electrons to create image. Can magnify to 500,000X

What cells have in common All cells have a plasma membrane. Cells break down molecules for energy (metabolism). All cells have some type of genetic material

Differences in cells Cells differ in their function (what they can do). Cells are grouped along 2 distinguishing differences – prokaryotic and eukaryotic.

Prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells Prokaryotic – cells without a nucleus or membrane bound organelles. Example is bacteria. Eukaryotic – cells that contain a nucelus and other membrane bound organelles. Examples are plants, animals, protists, and fungi.
