HELPING THE UNEMPLOYED  Providing access to 8 computers  Handouts with links to local, state, and national job postings  Interviewing workshops hosted by local business managers  Partner in the Texas Workskills Development in Libraries project  Designated bookshelf with career development and job search materials

TEACHING LIFE SKILLS  Computer classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, providing instruction in navigating the Internet, using word processing software, and managing a personal budget spreadsheet  Debt management classes hosted by a local banker  Available government forms for things like applying for a drivers license and submitting taxes—as well as handbooks to help patrons prepare

PROMOTING EDUCATION  Special section with GED preparation materials  Phone numbers of local educators and retired teachers who provide free or low-cost GED tutoring  Quiet rooms where patrons can study or take practice tests  Group meeting rooms with white boards to facilitate group learning and projects

AIDING VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE  Partnerships with local shelters to allow shelter organizers to pick up materials for residents  Library staff training in providing reference to those in sensitive situtations  Handouts with local service provider and national hotline contact information

INFORMING ABOUT HEALTH ISSUES  Contact information on hand for local social service and government agencies, health care providers, and food banks  Hosted meetings of a local weight-loss support group  Lecture by a local dietician  Hosted CPR training course that certified 19 community members “Because the library offered us a free meeting space, we were able to provide our sessions at a reduced cost.” – Host of weight-loss support group
