Inactive Letters This letters are used after a property comes off a management lists and the property manager states that this property is no longer under their management. We send it out to confirm what the status of the account is and if it comes back to us as it is not being rented we do a field check to confirm.

Resort Tax Suspects & Advertising Websites

Receiving Tips Resort Tax Evaders Hotline (941)

We start our Resort Tax suspects by having people submit tips using our anonymous tip hotline. This tip line can be located on our website by the FOR RENT icon or they are able to call and leave a tip on the tip line

When a tipster clicks on the Resort Tax Evaders icon on our website it will take them to this screen. This is where they can enter in the information they are wanting to submit.

Once a tipster submits a tip we will receive an showing us the information that was submitted.

Other ways to receive tips We also use sources such as; Craigslist Vacation Rental Websites Field Deputy Visits (Park Audits) Phone Tip Call ins

Craigslist

We use craigslist to search for vacation rentals in the Manatee County area.

Vacation Rental Websites

We search the web for vacation rentals in the Manatee County area and check to see if they already have an account with us.

Field Deputies (Park Audits) We have field deputies that go out and do park audits to renew park decals. When they arrive on the property they ask to speak to the owner and if the person states that they are a tenant for short term they report it back to us.

With the information we receive from the tips we go into our Excise program and search to confirm if they have ANY kind of account. Once we see they do not have a current account we start a suspect account.

Creating a Suspect Account

We add or reactivate an account in the resort tax system and show it as a Suspect Account using the information we collected from the tip submission.

Once we have created a suspect account we go out to do a field check to confirm if there is a short term renter in the unit. We use this form to fill in information we acquire while we are out in the field. We try to get as much information as we can to help out our investigation.

Once we have completed our field check, we like to go back and attach it to the account. In Excise we are able to attach documents to certain accounts. This allows us to go back and see what information was acquired on the field checks.

When we have discovered that there is a short term renter in the property we start by sending out our suspect letters.

Suspect Letters

These letters were created by our Resort Tax Team. They tell the owner that we have discovered they are renting out their property short term and informing them there is a tax due for short term rentals.

If we are unable to get a hold of the owner, or they refuse to pay the tax, there are two more letters we send out.. DID The second one is just another reminder letter stating we are aware they DID rent their property out due to our field checks. The third letter is a letter of assessment. We would then do our best to evaluate what we think the property would be rented for in that area. The responsibility is on the owner to prove us wrong.

Just a little FYI We started in FEB Since then we have had: 129 Suspect Accounts  35 of them have become Active Accounts  Collected $9, dollars and counting

Website

In October 08, we came up with a way to make our website easier for our taxpayers. This is what we have determined. To get to the new page click on the Resort Tax link under the quick links to the left of the page. It will take you to the Resort Tax Page.

This is what our new screen looks like…

Each section has their own personal application and link to the Resort Tax program. Here is what the Property Managers link looks like.

The New Application When you click on the application under your category it will take you to a newly updated application. Note: This application is for NEW Property Managers

This is the first screen you see asking to enter in the total amount of properties under your management.

It lets you enter in the information for your management company and for your properties Once you finish and click submit it will send us an with all your information

This is what our looks like. We will set up the account and notify you.

Just Adding Properties If you are wanting to add properties to your account, just click on the add properties link.

It will ask you to enter the number of properties you are wanting to submit, click next

It will take you to a screen and submit the property information

DOR Information We also have added a link to our new website showing DOR information. This screen will show you the latest Admin. Codes and Statues relating to the Resort Tax. Also has driving directions to DOR and other information.

Owner’s Blocked Calendars

Due to our internet research we are finding properties being advertised by the individual property owners. These property owners are also under a management company. We are requesting from the property managers, owner’s blocked calendars to confirm they are renting and remitting the tax.
