Course Overview The focus of English II is to… – Read, analyze and thoughtfully respond to world literature both classic and contemporary including a Shakespearean play. – Read a wide variety of complex texts using both literary and informational text. – Build vocabulary skills necessary for the SAT and ACT. – Improve grammar and conventions and apply these skills to individual writing. – Continue to develop argumentative, informational/explanatory and narrative writing skills. – Communicate effectively (speaking and listening skills) in formal and informal settings.

Excerpts from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare (Rome) – How does power affect people? – What are the qualities of a good leader? – What factors lead to the betrayal of a friend? Night by Elie Wiesel / The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (WWII, Holocaust) – Why is mankind inhumane to other men? – How does power get exploited in society? – What role does faith play in life?

Core Units The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas OR Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (France, Napoleonic Era) – Is revenge really worth it? – How do the poor and destitute effect (+/-) a productive society? – Can one person make a difference in making the world a better place? My Forbidden Face by Latifa /A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (Afghanistan) – What must one do to rise from adversity? – How can a culture/nation/world make sure all its citizens are treated equally? – Who determines what moral code is right for a given society? – What is the value of freedom in the face of extreme danger and threat?

Grading Homework = 10 % Class Participation = 10% Quizzes (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Check) = 20% Tests (End of unit, Extensive writing tasks) = 30% Projects (Research-based, Independent reading journals) = 30% All English II students must take the EOC at the end of the semester. This score will count as 25% of the final grade.
