The attack on Pearl Harbor

How War Started In The United States! -Differences in China -The U.S. was their ally and sent them extra help. -Japan placed an embargo in Japan -Embargo means-“An order of government prohibiting commercial ships from leaving it’s ports”

How War Started In The United States! continued -Japan wanted oil and raw minerals from the US and we refused to give it to them. After this we became enemies and fought on different sides of the war. -We awe officially became part of the war in December 7, 1941.

Minoru Genda Minoru Genda Was the strategist who planned the Pearl Harbor attack. He had many accounts that he had to take into consideration but he did overcome these obstacles and destroyed Pearl Harbor or made Pearl Harbor a success in his point of view.

Pearl Harbor Location: Hawaii, This is found between the US mainland and East Asia. Considered safe and home to 8 or more of our best ships. We also had many aircraft carriers here which held many planes. The Arizona: This was a ship that fought in WWI and was docked at Pearl Harbor

Plot! -In Order to make a statement, the Japanese decided to attack Pearl Harbor using aircraft.

Why did they do this? They did this to get rid of the obstacle standing in their way of destroying the US. “In a dawn air attack, there is a high probability that it could be delivered as a complete surprise in spite of any patrols we might be using and that it might find us in a condition of readiness under which pursuit would be slow to start.”

Warnings! -It has been noted that the US was able to intercept a message from the Japanese. -This letter stated that if an agreement was not signed between the two countries things would “automatically” happen. -Ignoring several other warnings, including this one, was a big mistake.

Are They Coming? -This question was very complicated this is not just a yes or no question. -Why it was so complicated: -There were two men working the radar that day. Names: Private Joe Lockard & Private George Elliote

What happened! When they realized a radar signal was coming in they could not determine if it was one or many planes, friendly or enemy. The did not realize that they were over 50 Japanese planes heading toward them. There were 183 enemy planes ready to make a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Attack -If this is not bad enough, the US left all their planes in one location in case they needed to be used in short notice. -Now, the Japanese started to bomb away already celebrating in victory because the Americans had not planned a resistance. -The Japanese attacked everything in their path such as ships, planes, buildings, etc.

Message A Message was sent out and was an awakening to many US citizens. “Air Raid on Pearl Harbor. This is Not A Drill.”

The Arizona The Arizona was attacked, and the main deck was completely destroyed Approximately 2 million pounds of explosives ignited and around 900 members of her crew were killed as the ship went down into the “deep abyss of Davy Jones Locker”

Another Saying “I could see the men on the Arizona walking on the deck and burning alive. They had their helmets on. Their clothes were all seared off. They were a ghostly crew as they walked out of the flames. And then they just dropped dead.”

Jimmy Doolittle Jimmy Doolittle is the one person who thought of taking US land-based planes and taking them across the ocean and bombing the Japanese. He first picked the NORTH AMERICAN B-25B MITCHELL and he hand picked his crew to fly them. This did not work to plan so he then picked the USS HORNET. These ones worked, But the pilots still had to choose a way to die. They could bail-out, crash- land or ditch-at-sea. They dropped out of the sky and 8 US pilots were taken Hostage by the Japanese. All had been tortured, 3 were shot, 1 died from deplorable conditions, and 4 survived. His planned worked and made Japan vulnerable. When he retired he was very respected and he got 4 stars.

Dorrie Miller Miller: Despite enemy strafing and bombing and in the face of a serious fire, assisted in moving his Captain, who had been mortally wounded, to a place of greater safety, and later manned and operated a machine gun directed at enemy Japanese attacking aircraft until ordered to leave the bridge.
