IMPERIALISM: one people or country ruling the affairs of another people or country (“mother country”) Around the turn of the 20 th century, American interest in imperialist expansion grew for a number of reasons.

1. Economics: U.S. industry needed (as always) raw materials and new markets for American goods

2. Nationalism: Extreme devotion to one’s own nation, coupled with the idea that nations benefit from competition To prove its greatness, the U.S. needed to compete with European countries. In order to compete with Europe, the U.S. needed colonies.

3. Social Darwinism: The idea that some people and ways of life are better – “more fit” – than others America should expand because: 1) it deserved to; and 2) expansion would be good for those “other people”.
