*Writing will be taught using integration of the 6-Traits of Writing as well as an adapted curriculum from Empowering Writers. Students will learn to write fiction as well as non-fiction in exciting new ways that capture both their attention and their imagination. * Reading will be integrated into all subjects and will include skill based lessons, guided reading groups, and novel studies. *Language Arts will be taught using the Shurley English curriculum. Spelling and handwriting are integrated into all subjects. Miss Johnson Curriculum Highlights:

*Math curriculum will begin with a strong foundation of basic skills taught using Saxon Math. Problem solving skills will be incorporated daily using many methods and challenges. *Science will cover a wide range of fun and engaging topics. All topics will include hands on investigations as well as a strong integration of technology. The scientific process and journaling are daily foundations in our science classroom. Fourth grade Science will be pushed to a whole new level this year as they prepare for 5 th grade. Miss Stratton Curriculum Highlights:

Math Fluency Fact fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and basic division is comprised of 3 parts: Recall of the basic facts in each operation; Knowing when to use each operation in problem solving; and Recreating a forgotten fact. Fluency should have been mastered in lower grades. If your child is not fluent in multiplication and division facts, it is essential that they practice their facts every night so they will be prepared for 4 th grade work such as long multiplication, three digit division, and fractions.

Reading/Writing: students are expected to read daily and to write a summary of what they read each night. They are also expected to study their spelling words each week. Math: Saxon weekly homework will be assigned on a Monday and due that following Friday. Science: homework will be as need base. SS: projects will be assigned as needed. Unfinished classwork will need to be completed as homework. Unless otherwise noted, assignments are due on Friday. You will receive a weekly listing homework and major class assignments; however, students are encouraged to write all assignments in their planners. Late work will have a per day penalty of 11 points for up to 3 days. On the fourth day, work will receive a zero. ***Math and Social Studies textbooks may be brought home as needed. Homework

Grades are uploaded by Monday each week. It is the parents responsibility to monitor their child’s grades on-line. We will provide progress reports and report cards. We encourage you to set a value alert on your program. For example, you can set the program to you for any grade below a 70%. When we enter grades, we will enter a zero for missing work. The grade will be updated if the work is received within 3 days of the due date. Grades

Each student is encouraged to bring a healthy snack and water bottle to school each day. Snack and Water Bottles

The students will be engaging in different activities to learn about the following elements of music: - Beat and Rhythm - Melody and Harmony - Musical Form - Vocal and Instrument Color - Dynamics, Tempo, and Articulation - Style and Background Students will be exploring these concepts through listening, singing, and playing instruments Music with Mr. Yowell

We will be covering a variety of skills and software. We will be using a curriculum from Structured Learning that will build on the skills that were taught last year: Keyboarding, Web browsing, and Microsoft Products. If you would like to serve in the lab please don’t hesitate to contact me. Computer Curriculum
