EC Grant Agreement no GEOSS Interoperability for Weather Ocean and Water Enhancing the GEOSS Infrastructure for all the Stakeholders

The following demo aims at providing an overview of the UNESCO Ocean showcase, one of the showcases that the GEOWOW project is implementing. This could contribute to the StS BluePlanet Demonstrator

A new concept of operation for elaborating environmental indicators The scenario: a Scientist wants to discover and use Ocean ecosystem data and Climate data in GEOSS for fast prototyping of indicators, and produce maps and graphics tailored for policy makers in charge of Ocean Ecosystem Management. The following is an example tailored around a specific community. GEOWOW produces “enablers” that need to be customized based on the needs of the specific community. What is shown in the presentation is intended to be an example of usage of such enablers within a specific community from their own portal. In this example, Cloud computing resources are also leveraged.

Discovered data: Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox A new concept of operation for elaborating environmental indicators The scenario: a Scientist wants to discover and use Ocean ecosystem data and Climate data in GEOSS for fast prototyping of indicators, and produce maps and graphics tailored for policy makers in charge of Ocean Ecosystem Management. Discovered data: Community Cloud Sandbox management From a Community Portal the Scientist selects the geographical area of interest (1) and temporal range (2) to start discovering GEOSS data (3). Set the temporal range Set the area of interest Start the discovery in GEOSS 01/01/ Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

Discovered data: 01/01/2012 The Scientist selects the data of interest. These will be used to elaborate a new indicator. Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

Discovered data: 01/01/2012 After selecting the data, the Scientist can use these data on a model previously prepared and stored in a Sandbox, or can start the steps required to create a new indicator. The User requests a new Sandbox Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

Discovered data: Available Sandboxes: 01/01/2012 The Scientist selects an existing template (set of HW and SW configuration) to create a new Sandbox. This will provide a processing environment where to design and implement the algorithm to elaborate the new indicator. Request a New Sandbox Community Cloud Sandbox management Submit the request CoralReef stress New indicator based on ESGF – years prediction The User fill a form to create a new Sandbox

01/01/2012 The Scientist can now access the Sandbox and start implementing the algorithm. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Algorithm missing Start coding Deploy on Cloud Access the Sandbox Community Cloud Sandbox management Submit the request CoralReef stress New indicator based on ESGF – years prediction Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

Discovered data: 01/01/2012 The Scientist can code the algorithm in a Shell. Any needed SW can be installed and programming language can be used. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Algorithm missing Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

01/01/2012 The Scientist can code the algorithm in a Shell. Any needed SW can be installed and programming language can be used. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Algorithm missing Discovered data: The scientist can start coding the algorithm and testing it on the discovered GEOSS data. APIs for accessing the discovered data are available. Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

01/01/2012 When the algorithm has been coded and validated, it can be run on the full set of selected data on a Cloud based infrastructure. The processing might be distributed among different machines. NameStatusAction CoralReef stressReady Start coding Deploy on Cloud Discovered data: Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

01/01/2012 When the algorithm has been coded and validated, it can be run on the full set of selected data on a Cloud based infrastructure. The processing might be distributed among different machines. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Running on Cloud Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox

01/01/2012 At the end of the processing, the Scientist can access the result, present them to decision makers, and register them as a new resource in GEOSS. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Results available Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox (Re) Deploy on Cloud Clone and modify Access the results

01/01/2012 At the end of the processing, the Scientist can access the result, present them to decision makers, and register them as a new resource in GEOSS. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Results available Start registration into GEOSS Community Cloud Sandbox management For demonstration purposes only Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox (Re) Deploy on Cloud Clone and modify Access the results

Other Scientists or GEOSS users can discover the indicator through the GeoWebPortal or through Community Portals connected to the GEOSS Common Infrastructure

01/01/2012 Meanwhile, our Community Scientist can: 1.discover or select other data and re-deploy the Sandbox on the Cloud 2.clone the Sandbox or create a new one, to modify the algorithm or implement a new one NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Results available (Re) Deploy on Cloud Clone and modify Access the results 1 Community Cloud Sandbox management 1 Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox 2 2

01/01/2012 Once the Sandbox is prepared (algorithm developed and tested) it may be shared and made available to other Community Scientists (included the ones without coding skills) that can run it on selected data. NameStatusAction CoralReef stress Ready Community Cloud Sandbox management Available Sandboxes: Request a New Sandbox Clone and modify Deploy on Cloud

ESA and Terradue partners in GEOWOW are currently finalizing the enablers that will allow UNESCO-IOC to develop the previous scenario. This is a contribution to Blue Planet task which aims at delivering Societal Benefits in multiple SBAs from Ocean observations

FAQs What happens after a processing is successfully completed? Repeatability: a sandbox can be stored and up-dated afterwards to scale-up with additional data or to replace the input data with new (e.g. higher quality) ones Who can access the tools, included the sandboxes? Policy: the specific Community will customize the enablers and will decide the policy for accessing the tools and the results What kinds of data are used? In this specific scenario, the input data are Ocean ecosystem data and Climate data from Earth Science Grid Federation. The community can decide the data policy governing the results, e.g., can decide to register them as GEOSS DataCORE.
