Patricia C. McKissack and Fredrick McKissack Patricia was born on August 9, 1944 in Smyrna, Tennessee to Robert and Erna Carwell. Fredrick was born in 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Setting The story took place at West Virginia, Memphis, and a porter house.

3rd Person and Nonfiction The point of view is in 3rd person It is Nonfiction, because it has history and legend in the story.

Plot Legends about porters and their famous heroes.

Vocab Mishaps- unfortunate, unlucky accidents. Burdened- weighed down by work, duty, or sorrow.

Characters Casey Jones- railroad engineer that got into a crash and managed to save everybody’s life but his own. John Henry- railroad worker that beat a steam engine at driving stakes into the ground and had a heart attack. Daddy Joe- an imaginary idol that could walk on the train barefoot while it was moving.
