Significant results/highlights during the first year project Recently published data (Hartman et al, 2014) shows an increase in seawater pCO 2 from earlier data published by Kortzinger et al, 2008). There was no significant change in CO 2 flux between the two time periods shown (-1.52 ± 0.7 mmol m -2 d -1 for the period and ± 0.6 mmol m -2 d -1 for the period). WP 2 / WP3 – Technological & Procedural Harmonisation Task 2.1:Review of the current status of all fixed observing sites Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
Training of personnel Documentation ( cruise reports, meta data) is important however A ‘How to’ document is not enough on its own Personnel training ensures continuity of methods Each cruise take lots of pictures – they are a really useful tool WP 3 – Procedural Harmonisation Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
Laboratory calibration Instruments calibrated against primary standards where possible Figure 1: Lab Calibration of the SUNA nitrate sensor in the ultra-pure (Milli-Q/DI) water. WP 3 – Procedural Harmonisation Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
Instrumentation pre and post calibration Mooring Instrumentation mounted on CTD cast Biofouling WP 3 – Procedural Harmonisation Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
Data Inspection Regular visual Inspection of the telemetered data is important E.g. GPS notifies of possible mooring drift Graphical data output allows instruments with problems to be identified prior to mooring turnaround Identification of fouling effects Can provide clues to technical problems. Changes in environmental parameters can be identified and acted upon ( e.g. by a change in sampling strategy or instrument range) WP 3 – Procedural Harmonisation Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
