Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers Over a year ago, a number of postdoctoral (Ph.Ds) fellows began meeting together and with Barbara Bierer Issues and needs: presented at APC and PRC March, 2006: sponsored informal lunch for Postdocs ~250 attended May, 2006: follow up meeting to discuss advisability and goals of office History:

Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers Defining the Need: There is a well established, nationally recognized and documented need for effective PostDoctoral training - National Academies study released in March, 2005, “Bridges to Independence: Fostering the independence of new investigators in biomedical research”: The National PostDoc Association (NPA) Recommended Practices Guide strongly suggests implementation of a PostDoc Office and PostDoc Policies : To help ensure the appropriate training and support of Post-Doctoral fellows and aid in their transition to become independent scientific investigators

Organization: Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers Leveraging educational opportunities, seminars, and administrative support; data collection; cooperation and synergy.

Mission Statement: Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers Our Mission is to support the next generation of career scientists by recognizing the value and contributions of postdoctoral scholars, enhancing the training experience, encouraging professional responsibility, fostering effective mentoring and providing guidance for future career choices.

Progress & Accomplishments: Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers OPC established - June 2006 Postdoc Advisory Committee established – July 2006 Four spots secured for BWH postdocs to attend Teaching Conference at Harvard’s Derek Bok Center for Teaching & Learning M2 Shuttle – Harvard has postponed policy change Monthly Postdoc Focus groups – September 2006 Monthly Postdoc Lunches/Dinners OPC Seminar series for Spring 2007 in planning stages National Postdoctoral Association – HMS affiliates awarded Spring 2008 Meeting Affiliated HMS Postdoc/Research Careers Offices meeting Co-Sponsorship of career events in conjunction with RCDC

Goals: To Establish and Develop: Postdoctoral Advisory Committee – develop policies & initiatives Postdoctoral Association – build community Standardized benefits package and payscale – transparency Advocacy and resource center for the postdoctoral community Orientation – to complement existing orientations Institutionally defined training period – guidelines for extension Reviews of training progress – performance evaluations Improved skills and competencies – i.e. mentoring Diversity Initiatives: Outreach, Retention, Recruitment Mechanism for grievances – ombudsperson Career Development seminars – i.e. alternate career paths Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Office for Postdoctoral Careers

Short Term Goals: 1 year Address payscale/benefits Develop definitions for research positions and pay categories Develop Postdoc orientation Provide assistance to International postdoc community Develop Communications: website/newsletter Establish working relationships with area Postdoc offices Offer relevant workshops/seminars Establish mechanism for grievances – ombudsperson & track trends Organize Postdoc social and networking events Annual Postdoc retreat: poster session, workshops
