MINISTRIA E ARSIMIT, SHKENCËS DHE TEKNOLOGJISË E KOSOVËS MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF KOSOVA DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CURRICULA FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL IN KOSOVA Arbnor Pajaziti, University of Prishtina

Objectives To create the possibilities for new curricula culture in Kosova. New curricula will enable the students and the youth of Kosova to develop and cultivate the new skills in social life and labor market. Subject curricula provides the development in equity manner of the students knowledge, skills, values, sustainable and behaving models.

Expected results All the children in Kosova are educated in the schools based on the new curricula, which respects differences and implements the relevances of content and education methods; Kosovan children will be integrated in the modern education process with a new education and learning methodology for long life learning.

The International Experts have been identified in order to provide advices and technical assistance on the curricula development, as follows: Nine experts from Slovenia and three from Albania. British Office and partially French Office in Kosova supported the process with experts and financial means. There were also the experts from USA, Kanada, … participating with lectures to local experts. The experts have been engaged in order to ensure the inter-curricula issues: health education, human rights and gender issues. International Support

Within the period A pril- J une 2003, four Seminar s took place. In the Seminar that took place on April in Gjakova, the Standards of Subject and Goal for three levels: primary school, lowerer secondary school and upper secondary school have been finished. During the S eminars on May and June 2003, many experiences on development of curricula from other countries have been analyzed and the teaching programs for Subjects of grade 1, 6, 10 as well as the instructions for pre-schooling have been compiled. Curricula for the grade 1,6,10 as well as for the pre-schooling has been finalized. Curricula for the grade 1,6,10 has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST). Three books for the Curriucula of the grade 1,6,10 have been published. The teaching programs for the minorities mother tongues, history and arts have been compiled, while other teaching programs have been translated from albanian language into serbian, bosnian and turkish. Information Seminars for all teaching staff that give the lectures to the grade 1,6,10 have been organized. The training of the Subject experts on implementation of new teaching programs took place. Training for the implementation of teaching programs for implementation of teaching programs with all teaching staff for grades 6 and 10 of all the territory of Kosova as well as the teachers of the grade 1 in all municipalities has been organized. Textbooks There have been published almost all the textbooks for grade 9. According to the Law on Primary and Secondary Education Section 3, Subsection 3.2, textbooks in the first level (grade) are gratis, whereas in the second and third grade are provided by the government, if they have financial means. There have been published almost all the Manuals for Subjects for grade 10.

Test of achievements The test of achievements for the grade 9 has been developed. The test has been evaluated and the criteria of registration of the grade 10 has been defined.

The preparations for development of teaching programs for the grade 2,7,11 and pre-primary level have been done. Working plan for development of teaching program for grade 2,7,11 and pre-primary has been defined. The group of Subject Experts for grades 2,7,11 and pre-primary has been established. The first meeting with experts took place. The analysis and review of existing teaching programs according the levels 1-5, 6-9 and 10 – 12 or 13 took place. The finalization of the Content and Achievement Standards according the levels has been done. The objectives of the first Seminar for development of teaching programs have been defined.
