2005 – The European Year of Citizenship through Education The European Year of Citizenship will be launched in Bulgaria, on 13 and 14 December 2004

2005 – The European Year of Citizenship through Education Objectives of the Year Objectives of the Year Promote awareness of the fundamental role of education in the development of citizenship Encourage the participation of citizens in a democratic society: 1. Political dimension – participation in decision- making 2. Legal dimension – being aware of and exercising citizens rights and responsibilities 3. Cultural dimension – respect for all peoples and fundamental democratic values; contributing to peaceful and intercultural relations 4. Social and economic dimension – combat exclusion and promote social inclusion (continued)

It can provide legislative assistance to member states in the field of EDC assist member states and relevant NGOs with the organisation of teacher/multiplier training seminars develop instruments for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, provide communication tools and codes of good practice (EDC pack) provide an up-to-date EDC database on legislation policy and other policy documents
