Essential Question: Why do people interpret information differently?

Bias – Being in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way that is unfair to the other person or group. To influence in a particular, typically unfair direction; prejudice. We ALL have bias, even when we’re not thinking about it! Quotation: “Sigsbee Charter School … that’s the hottest school in town!” ~ Judy Blume

Is “bias” the truth?

Sometimes “bias” is intentional. How do advertisements show bias?

Bias in Quotations Before the throne of the Almighty, man will be judged not by his acts but by his intentions. For God alone reads our hearts. ~ Mahatma Gandhi A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. ~ Albert Einstein Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. ~ Abraham Lincoln The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they must be felt with the heart. ~ Helen Keller The riskiest thing you can do is get greedy. ~ Lance Armstrong I think when you spread the wealth around it’s good for everybody. ~ President Obama It is not the truth that matters, but victory. ~ Adolf Hitler

Lyrical Bias LOCHLOOSA (MOFRO) Homesick but it's alright Lochloosa is on my mind She's on my mind I swear it's ten thousand degrees in the shade Lord have mercy knows - how much I love it Every mosquito every rattlesnake Every cane break – everything Every alligator every blackwater swamp Every freshwater spring – everything All we need is one more damn developer Tearing her heart out All we need is one more Mickey Mouse Another golf course another country club Another gated community Lord I need her Lord I need her And she's slipping away If my grandfather could see her now He'd lay down and die Cause every minute every second every hour Every day - Lord she's slipping away Homesick but it's alright Lochloosa is on my mind She's on my mind =6EALPEYBt3E

Does our culture influence our bias? 1. The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group 2. The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices of a group or organization

Can our cultural backgrounds or preferences affect the way we interpret information? Video: Madison Rising The Star Spangled Banner

Ethnicity and Race Ethnicity is based on the following categorization: Hispanic or Latino: A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. The term "Spanish origin" can be used in addition to "Hispanic or Latino." Race is based on the following five categorizations: American Indian or Alaska Native: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment. Asian: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. Black or African American: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. Terms such as "Haitian" or "Negro" can be used in addition to "Black or African American." Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. White: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
