What is Study Abroad? Study Abroad: any type of international travel that involves an educational component – academic course work – that is applicable to a student’s degree program

Types of Programs O Direct Exchange O Intensive Language O Short-term O Provider Programs

Direct Exchanges O Over 35 countries (135+ Universities) from which to choose O Pay UNM tuition O Most scholarships and financial aid apply O Credits transfer back to UNM O Students can take classes in English AND/OR host country language O Deadlines: Fall – Feb 15, Spring – Sept 15

Intensive Language O Primarily in Latin America & Spain O Tuition is paid directly to the school O Most scholarships and financial aid apply O Short and long term programs available O Transfer language credits back to UNM O Deadlines: Summer – April 1, Fall – June 1, Spring – Oct. 1

Short-Term Programs O Available around the world O 2 types: O Faculty-led O Other (non-faculty) O Typically offered during winter/spring/summer breaks O Scholarships may be available

Provider Programs O Study Abroad Provider: an independent organization that administers study abroad programs for students. O Students pay provider tuition and program fee/s O Most scholarships and financial aid apply O Credits transfer back to UNM (only accredited/approved providers and universities)

Financial O Most scholarships/financial aid can be applied to study abroad programs if they occur during the academic year O UNM Regents International Study Grant, Gilman and Boren Scholarships O Eligibility for some outside scholarships based on need, destination or language O Visit GEO website for an extensive list of scholarships O Search on your own!

Housing O Type of housing varies per school/university/program O Can be Dorms (Europe), Host Families (Latin America), or Shared Apartments O Typically arranged AFTER acceptance to school O Paid for in Host Country (typically NOT in US Dollars)

Credits O All credits transfer back as “generic credit” initially O To transfer study abroad course work as a SPECIFIC UNM course you must follow specific procedure outlined by UNM O Be sure to secure these credits before leaving as well as when you return - all credits are PENDING until Transcripts AND International Exception Form are submitted after you return O Remember to give us your transcript by March 1 for Fall or October 1 for Spring semesters, for scholarship purposes

Application Process O Visit: O Create profile O Search the “STUDENTS” link to find important info on the application process O Make an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor O Pay attention to Application Deadlines, think about Visas, etc
